The ATH-T400 headphones are nice for the price. It's exceptionally rare to see a bigger brand name headphone with big 53mm drivers for $60 or less, but Audio-Technica achieved that with these phones. Note that these are full-sized headphones so they are on the large side. The cups themselves aren't huge, a bit bigger than a Sennheiser HD-202's but not as big as A-T's own A700,etc. Although the pics suggest a round cup, they are in fact oval shaped. The headband and two supporting wires do take up a lot of space and protrude from your head so they do look a little strange and definitely add to the size factor.These are easily driven by most portable devices so no amp is required although one would likely improve sound, but these are not portable headphones, obviously. Construction is definitely towards the top of the price range. Like almost all headphones in the under $100 category, they are mostly plastic, but in this case, the plastic quality is very good and feels durable. Obviously, only having two wires providing the connection between the cups means that they are not the most rigid, but the feel of the headphones does make it seem like these will last a long time if they aren't abused. Cable is nice and thick with decent strain relief.Although the design looks odd on your head, they are quite comfortable, yet provides enough pressure to seal nicely over your ears. Isolation is very good so you will get some passive noise reduction. Soundstage is also nice for a closed headphone. Soundwise, these come across as somewhat bass heavy. There is a bit of bloat in the mid-bass, but otherwise the bass provides decent punch and there is reasonable extension on the low end. Mids are a bit recessed which when combined with the mid-bass bloat does bury parts occasionally. The treble is detailed, but lacks a little brilliance. Overall sound profile is laid-back, warm, and smooth. Some will love the sound, others will not, which is typical for most headphones in this price level. Overall, these are a great choice if you are looking at a budget of $60 or less, but if you prefer a brighter, more open sound, with more emphasis on treble, you should look at other options first.
Edit: After burn-in the character of these headphones really changed. The mids really open up and come forward. These are much more balanced than I initially gave them credit for. Bass heaviness is gone in favor over an overall balanced quality. The tone also is much more immediate and less laid back and detail has improved. I don't hear parts being buried any more. It is still a clearly closed profile and it does lack the space that open sets give you, but overall sound quality is starting to impress me.

Got this headphones (ATH T400) a week ago. This is my first full size headphones. I have had in-the-ear and smaller size over-the-ear HP before. I am not a music producer or audiophile.Burn-In: I gave about 40 hours of burn-in so far. I left it on a local Rock FM for three nights and have been listening for 4/5 hours a day at work.
Comparison: I am comparing this with Bose Over-the-ear, Bose in-ear, JVC HARX500, Senheisser 203.
I think it beats all of them in comfort and most of them (except bose-over-ear) in sound clarity and bass. Despite it's size it's amazing how comfortable and light weight this headphone is. I don't feel the weight on my head. It has much better build and expensive look than HARX500. Slightly bigger but thinner cans than HARX500. The headband has two support rods that make it look bigger. The adjustable headband makes it extremely easy to adjust headsize. Earpads are soft and fits nicely around the ear. It sticks nicely around the ear so sound leakage is unnoticeable.
After reading some reviews I was expecting deeper bass than how much it produces. It has just about right for most people but I would have liked it slightly deeper thump.
More I use this I feel that this Headphone is extremely accurate to the original sound. I tested this by listening to some of the Metallica songs on my Bose Surround system and tried it with this HP on my mobile phone. Sound produced by this HP are very accurate to the CD on Bose Surround. Highs and mids are very balanced. The vocal is clear not muddied with mids. Vocal, highs and mids are nicely separated. I am hoping for better bass after 100 hours of burn-in (not sure if that would ever happen but I am hoping so). I also noticed that when I used the Android built-in Music Player's sound enhancer the bass and vocal sounded much better. I loved the bass on enhancer. This makes me believe that the headphones has potential to produce much better sound if the music player's setting is configured correctly. I also tested this into my receiver system and see if amplifier would enhance the bass. I think this headphone is simply accurate to the original sound.
I have been listening to songs on my work laptop through Google Music on Cloud. If I forget about my desire for slightly deeper bass then I am extremely loving this headphone more and more.

I will update this review if this headphone transforms amazingly after 100 hours of burn-in as some reviewers believe.What can I say, got 5 pairs of the ATH-T400 yesterday one for me, rest as gifts. Purchased 2 and tested one and immediately went back to the store and got 3 more. Really didn't expect great sound (or lack of it) at this price range. More expensive headsets would be a diminishing return on your dollar which is typical on all audio gears, but this is a good starting point. Each of the 2 round tubing for the headband has a steel spring inside, not all plastic, so should give years of service unlike both of my Sennheisers with both bands broken within 2 years.
Very comfortable except it gets a little warm inside the ear-cup Its closed, not open air. But still better than my first Koss with liquid filled ear pads and headband too tight your will sweat in that Koss for extended use but it had pretty good sound then. Exterior sound isolation is good and you won't hear the doorbell or your neighbors lawnmower when the music is on except listening to classical during silent passages.
Very efficient, 105 db/mW. Almost anything could drive it at good sound level. Had to turn the sound volume way down even on my anemic build-in motherboard audio output jack.
Frequency range 15-23,000 Hz. Better than your ears. That only tell part of the story, what you really wanted to know is the frequency response plotted on graph paper indicating the deviations relative to dips and peaks throughout the audio range and how smooth the response is. No distortion figure S/N ratio provided either nor transient respond. You don't expect any technical detail at this price range and was not provided. Lets say it sounded pretty good: highs were crisp, mid-range smooth and lows were tight. Transient response were good too so was seperation. I listen to vocals, jazz, pop, light rock and a little classical and opera. Would not know if its any good for hard rock, metal or any sound requiring very deep base and very high sound pressure.
Decent headset for the money.

Reason I'm giving this product a 1 star, is it lasted a bit over a month before it just stopped working. It produces a weird blur sound without any bass.
I would recommend this product only if it were to last longer, but this is bs. 1 month!!!
