I do a lot of podcast so this will be a good thing for me to use in the future.

I figured out the turning my sound card input gain structure down almost all the way and hitting the preamp as hard as I could gave the best signal to noise ratio.

Buy Shure X2U XLR-to-USB Signal Adapter Now

I purchased this specifically to see if I could use this with Dragon Naturally Speaking and hopefully improve my recognition accuracy by some tiny amount. I can't say if it succeeds at that or not; Dragon is one contrary beast of a program. Nonetheless, when I use this for other purposes, such as simple voice recording, I've noticed nothing but clean sound and plenty of gain.

There are a number of presumably comparable devices out there made by the likes of OSP, Marshall, Alesis, Lightsnake, and others. I started by purchasing Marshall's XLR-USB adapter and found it had a really weak signal that usually needed to be normalized at a MUCH higher volume. I sold that at a small loss on eBay so I could try something else and this was it. (To be fair, it appears that Marshall has re-designed their USB adapter and I think the second version may have addressed this concern.)

The reviews I've read on the OSP and Lightsnake adapters seem to indicate they are not really balanced input, and that inside the box the 2nd and 3rd pins (hope I recall that correctly) are soldered together just like in a simple bal-unbalanced adapter. I don't believe that's the case here.

So far I totally disagree with other reviewers here claiming it's noisy. I've observed no noise.

Sturdy, solid construction. Has some heft to it; in fact, a bit heavy for its size. You really don't want to attach it to a mic directly if you intend on holding it very long, especially if you're a young aspiring starlet. :-)

My only minor detractor is I wish the phantom power button were designed so it's difficult to press by accident. This is the single most overlooked design flaw in mic preamps in general. You can press the phantom power button by mistake and according to some authorities, destroy a very expensive mic by accident. I can't afford many quality mics and so this isn't much of a risk for me. :-)

I have tried and presently own a handful of mic preamps and USB adapters, including the ART USB Dual Pre and an Edirol UA-25EX, and have tried a variety of higher-end USB soundcard devices. This compares pretty favorably with any of them, given its simple purpose. I think as far as usb-powered mono xlr-usb adapters go, you're not likely to do much better presently. You can certainly get a cheaper one, but this is clearly built to Shure's solid design standards and will outlast any of them.

The Shure X2U is rugged, sounds great, and it works EXCELLENT for what it is designed for: connecting a microphone to a computer. Because it has a gain control, it also works great for connecting to a line-level output of a sound console. It's basically an high-quality external sound card.

Phantom power

True Mic or Line level input

Plug-and-play compatible with Mac and Linux

Headphones can be connected to monitor yourself and/or the currently playing tracks

Light indicates signal present and clipping

If you use a $1000 microphone for studio quality recording, get something with more dynamic range. It's not studio quality, but it's close.

EDIT: If you're getting a lot of static, replace your USB cable!

I dont understand how many people complain about hiss. I have used this mic for well over a year and have had no problems with hiss. I give this item 4 stars because its obviously not the best preamp you can get, but its well worth the buy. The phantom power this unit supplies is plenty powerful for condenser mics. I tested this preamp and compared to a presonus firebox, the sound reproduction of this is almost identical. So, dont let reviews trashing on this item steer you away from purchasing this product. Of course if you have a larger budget I would say to explore your options, but in the $100 range you will not find any better than this.

As several have mentioned, this adapter will give high levels of background hiss on some machines. I talked to Shure and they indicate there is a setting fix for some Vista and Win7 machines that involves bringing the internal gain level way down:This cured the hiss on my X2U that made it unusable otherwise (Win7-64/MacBook Air)

While I don't own this amp, I did have the opportunity to put my friend's amp through its paces yesterday, and I thought I'd share a few thoughts as no one else has written a review of this fantastic little practice amp. This is a 1 watt tube combo amp with an 8-inch speaker. The first thing you should know is that a 1 watt tube amp is suited for practice and small-time jam sessions only, though I suppose if you threw a mic in front of it you could play a small gig. The second thing you should know is that, for the money, this is probably the best sounding practice amp on the market. Seriously. You can dial in a surprising range of tones through this amp; the clean channel can be very clean if you keep the gain low, but the audible volume will also be pretty low. But lets be honest, you don't buy a 1-watt tube amp for the clean tones. If you dial up the gain on the clean channel you get a very crunchy tone that's perfect for classic rock. Switch over to the drive channel and keep the gain low and you're still in classic rock territory. Start cranking the gain and you can get some pretty hard rock tones; not ultra high gain, but enough to get some good chug out of your palm muting. The most unique aspect of this amp is the ISF (Infinite Shape Feature) knob. This knob replaces the standard tone control, and rather than simply adding or taking away bass or treble tones, rather it "shapes" the qualities of the tones between an "American" sound and a "British" sound. Essentially, the American sound involves a more pronounced bass and low-mid response, with very smooth highs. The British sound has a little less bass and a more pronounced midrange and cutting highs. What's so unique about these blackstar amps is that you can mix the two different sound types to find the middle ground that sounds best to you. In addition to the control for the two channels, this amp also has an output for direct recording, and an input for your ipod or cd player, both of which are features you rarely find in an all-tube amp at this price-point.

To conclude, I plan to buy one of these amp as soon as I have the finances to do so; there's no replacement for pure tube tone, and while modelling technology is steadily improving, it's nice to see such a great sounding all-tube amp for such an affordable price.

If you must know, this is the best 1 watt tube amp on the market as of 2011. It's transparant, chimey, glassy and very responsive to your touch.

I know what you're thinking!!! 1 watt!!!? is it loud enough? honestly!!? not really loud enough to practice with a heavy handed drummer, but will do fine with low key jam sessions and chill metal riffage! did I just say chill metal riffage?!

Former marshall amp designers quit the pigeon holed and profit minded marshall company to produce the amps that they've really wanted to create.

This is one of their babies. Most tube amps in this price category sound harsh, hard and buzzy, but this guy sounds warm, tight, focused and reproduces the tones of the individual guitar faithfully. I'm getting distinct sounds out of every guitar that I own.

It gets that cranked to "11" tone that we all love. Since this is only a one watt amp, our ears will thank us for not assaulting them with ludicrous S.P.Ls.

If you wish to play gig with this amp, you can mic it and/or plug into the emulated speaker out. The sound guy and the audience will thank you for it.

I listened to this side-by-side to a Marshall 1 watt 50th anniversary edition costing over 3 times as much and the Blackstar sounded noticeably better. If you practice and want that 100 watt killer crunch sound, this little beauty is just the ticket. My practice room is 12X12 and it will get quite loud, I still can't believe a 1 watt tube amp puts out this much quality sound. Don't worry about it being assembled in Vietnam, this Blackwell is total quality in every way.

It arrived with no issues and I use this amp every day. it does need to warm up or at least mine does...If I plug and play immediately the sound tends to crack and fade until it warms up but I am used to it so this doesn't bother me at all. The amp is actually quite loud for being a 1 watt amp. I was initially worried that 1 watt would be too quiet. I play and practice for myself so I don't need a loud amp but even when I feel like rocking out and turning the gain up high and the distortion on it's plenty loud maybe I could annoy the neighbor if I open my door...it's a very nice looking amp as well...if I want a bigger one I will buy another black star also the reverb is nice...I like a touch of reverb when I play I am not hard core into reverb but a little touch of reverb is good

This is a sweet little amp that packs a punch in my practice room.I wouldn't gig with it unless the drummer played cardboard boxes but great for home!

PROS:this is the perfect practice amp!!!!!! i love it!! i got it for christmas, and i use it all the time! i love how it has clean, crunch, metal, and insane settings! (my favorite is metal) this amp allows you to play any style whether it is country, blues, alternative, rock, metal, or deathcore! i am rockin' out to nirvana, ozzy, three days grace, skillet, guns n' roses, metallica, and evanescence! the effects are great, and you will need them for some songs. also it comes with a tuner, and a place to plug in anything you need to plug in like a footpedal or an effect box. it also comes with something very handy. it has a place to plug in your ipod, mp3 player, or cd player. just buy an audio cable at radio shack for $8. the sound is phenomenal when you play your ipod. this means you can play along with your favorite songs from the same source! this will take practicing to a whole other level.

CONS: the booklet it comes with is absolutely no help WHATSOEVER. the tuner sucks. just buy a chromatic tuner for $15. when you are on clean, it automatically turns on the echo effect, even if its off. to turn it off, you have to manually turn the echo effects knob all the way and back to turn it off. this can be very annoying if you dont want the echo effect.

Overall, a fantastic amp. Recommended for anyone. Hope this review helps.

I use this compact modeling amp for guitar practice in my living room and am thinking about doing some recording with it. You will not believe the amazing sounds that can come out of this little box. The Clean amp model sounds as sweet as honey, and the Insane model kicks-out down-and-dirty, soul-satisfying distortion. There are two other amplifier models (Crunch and Metal) that pretty much cover the gamut of electric guitar amplification sounds. All six effects sound good, and this amp is light enough to haul around easily.

Read all the features this unit has. I can't believe the sound from this !!! Clean is very crisp. Crunch is classic rock Marshall tube sound, Metal is a cranked Laney &/or Peavey amp sound & Insane has that Mesa Boggie metal red tone for sure. All are adustable w/ tone & effects. each preset is nicely tunable with your pick up selector, volume & tone right at the guitar. It cranks too ! Gets nice & loud with very controlable tube like feedback. A must have ! The price is a steal & the case, speaker grill, knobs & buttons are very good quality. I give it raving reviews !

Want Line 6 Spider IV 15 15-watt 1x8 Modeling Guitar Amplifier Discount?

Bought this amp to play along with a Squier Classic Vibe 50's strat. It has a broad range of settings and effects that can be used. I found the clean channel to be not so clean. Tried resetting the clean several times to get rid of the pre-programmed echo or chorus effect, but it still has a bit of distortion to it. The crunch, metal, and insane channels all have their uses, but I found myself constantly playing to get to the sound quality I wanted regardless of channel or type of sound I was shooting for. I accessed some on-line help to try to work in the sounds, but it still takes more time to dial in the sound than I want to spend (more time messing with settings = less time playing).

Overall, the sound quality was OK for a practice amp

I'm sure that some people would be able to work this amp well for the type of music they are playing, but it just wasn't for me.

Well, after reading the reviews I gave this little amp a shot. The first one that arrived was dead out of the box [I think it was poor packaging by Amazon and it likely got shocked too hard]. Well, logged into Amazon and quickly got the return/replacment squared away and they "next dayed" the replacement to me. The replacement worked, and I love the sounds this thing can create. The manual that comes with it is very sketchy so I logged in to get the online manual. It was not a whole lot thicker, but was more helpful and answered a couple of my questions about what seemed a little strange. The preset buttons automatically "set" the various volume and tuning settings, but do not move the actual knobs. Thus when you touch something like the local gain knob, it cuts out the autmatically loaded setting and restarts at wherever the knob is. Thus you can go from really loud, touch a button and have zero volume. Once you see what is happening, it makes setting those buttons up for your practice area nice and easy and sensible. This little amp has a lot of heart and soul in it and is just what I wanted. I am a 52 year old former rock and roll guitarist relearning my old skills and this amp has great sound and sustain, even at whatever volume you want to play it at. It definitely makes practicing much more fun then trying to work with my old 100 watt Gibson solid state amp circa 1974. I have to blow the doors off my house to get that old amp to sound good. The Spider IV is a much better investment then an expensive fuzz box for my old amp, especially since I have no plans to perform anywhere but at home [and if I do someday, I will likely look at their bigger amps]. Oh, and I use a Les Paul Ultra guitar. Buy it, you will have fun with it, and if it is for your kid to practice with, he/she will love it.

Well, the second one started acting funny after a couple days and now the FX stuff randomly jumps into the mix. I can no longer turn the FX stuiff off by turning the knobs off. The Clean channel has a fast tremelo and heavy reverb now. Thus number 2 is going back for a refund. I think it likely that shock during shipment nailed the electronics. The manufacturer just puts it in a box with no styrofoam corners and then AMAZON just puts it in another bigger box with no padding, and thus it can slide all over and is shipped flat, rahter then standing up. Thus, I loved it while it worked, but I am not attempting another delivery of this from Amazon because 2 out of 2 is too bad of odds. I am crushed.... i still rate it high because it has a lot of potential, I just think they need to package it a lot better, and/or design their boards for more shock before letting a mail order house sell it.

The item itself is great, got it at a very good price, no complains.

Note for Amazon: the product description mentions cup earphones in the package, none are included.

Even without the phones this is a very good buy: the sounds are rich, easy to set up. I have also the elder brother of this product (YDD-55), which has 100 rythms compared with the 50 this one has, but it is also more expensive.

Ideal for the piano, bass or guitar player to use it for background percussion track.

Note: it has no MIDI, if you need it go with the other model.

Judging by the descriptions, not sure this was meant as a toy, but not sure what to call it as it is not being used as a drum trainer. Our 10 year old son is interested in music, but hasn't started in any formal music lessons. He likes to use this with his headphones and drum along with the music. The only issue is that with the hard plastic surrounding the rubber pads, when he misses, it is louder than we'd like. Still, so far it has been fun for our son to play and spends significant time finding new tunes and new drum patterns.

We got these drums for our 11 year old girl as a Christmas present and she hasn't stopped using them since. Excellent sound, size not too big (easy to storage) and it came with a nice pair of headphones.

I bought this for a Christmas gift for my 10-yr-old granddaughter who carries a small drum stick set in her backpack and drums along to songs on the radio as we go to piano lessons. The set looks in excellent condition, and the instruction book looks simple enough to figure out the various elements available on the set.

I'm confident in the Yamaha brand, so I'm expecting no problems.

Packaging was definitely excessive, but we are pleased with everything except for the fact that the headphones do not fit with the drum set, you must have some kind of adapter, which of course we did not have on Christmas morning......

I am delighted to report that these headphones will please your noggin in many ways.

For the price of these headphones, you will be getting more than your money's worth. While these are not audiophile or professional quality headphones, the sound quality is still -verygood. I was surprised to get such clear, deep tones out of headphones that cost so little...drum & bass sounds very nice. Its bass limit is not as volumous as a professional piece of equipment, but it does seem to have an output limiter that will stop the headphones from maxing out and making that fuzzy static sound, eventually resulting in permanent speaker damage. Sibilance is a frequent problem with many headphone products, but not these... not in the least bit. They handle treble and tweets with a great deal of clarity, and vocals sound so very nice. After having used Sony MDR-NC6, Sony MDR-XD100, and Koss R40, this product stands out as #1 in terms of comfort and sound, especially for the price. Get sucked into these headphones and you won't be disappointed. Adjust your equalizer to fit the music you like. Playback will sound just how you want it to.

In addition to great sound, these are comfortable as well. The earphones themselves are made of the standard squishy studio headphone cushioning, though the pads seem to be thicker than usual. The frame doesn't "pinch" your head either. Rather, it hugs. If you've ever used Sony MDR-NC6 before, you'll know what I mean by pinching...a frame so unflexible it presses your ears until they hurt. Not the ATH T22s... they respect your mellon. The phones themselves completely enclose the ear, which results in very little sound leak. The only complaint I have is that the frame arch does not have any padding.

I am very pleased with this purchase, and I hope that you may give these things a try once it is time to pick up a new pair of headphones.

Buy Audio-Technica Dynamic Stereo Headphones Now

I bought these because I was looking for a set of circum aural headphones (big headphones that go around your ear) that were inexpensive and had decent sound quality.

I was looking for a headphone that would have a good frequency response range and a relatively flat response across a majority of its given frequencies (so not a super-bass headphone) because I like to enjoy my music the way it was originally equalized. These headphones do very well on that front, the designers have made no assumptions about boosting bass or anything like that. All of this isn't to say that the headphones don't have good bass, they do, what I'm saying is the sound doesn't tend to be biased towards bass.

The other thing I was looking for was a headphone that would isolate me from my office environment. These headphones make it so I don't hear the environment around me without having to crank my music overly loud.

As far as sound quality:

Good response across a broad range of frequencies. Not megabass boosted, but not weak either.

Very low distortion at both high and low volumes.

Capable of being fairly loud.

UPDATE:

I knocked 2 stars off because the headphones just snapped on me. I'm quite upset that they broke, and this points to brittle plastic. I didn't mishandle them, I've just left them on my desk since I've had them, and put them on every day... My head's not oversized. It's a build quality issue. Let me reiterate though, the sound is great for the price, but they snapped.

Review is for: Audio-Technica Dynamic ATH-M10 Stereo Headphones

OVERVIEW:

-----------

SUPER COMFORTABLE, one of the most comfortable headphones:

Nice padding

Ear pieces swivel up/down and side-to-side

Very light overall

No head squeeze

As comfortable as the X11's though more sound isolation than the X11's

Perhaps slightly more comfortable than the Creative Sound Blaster Arena's which have the same quality padding and up/down side-to-side ear can flexibility. The Arena has more sound insulation if that is important among the comfy headphone options for you.

The ATH-M10 is roughly as comfortable as Bose AE2's which is really saying something.

Generally reviews find its sound surprisingly good for such an inexpensive pair.

I gave it five stars because for its price range it offers excellent value and really stands out for comfort.

CONS:

------

For computer use I wish a version of these headsets came with inline volume control. Especially for putting down headset, the option to put it on mute or turn down volume with a control on the cord would be great.

The Creative SoundBlaster Arena's and X11's are both examples of comfy headphones that have the in-line volume control.

SUMMARY:

----------

Highly recommend if looking primarily for comfort and need only a little sound isolation, and don't need an inline volume control on the cord.

These do sound great in a quiet area, but I assumed being airtight meant they would also help block the noise of the machine shop where I work. There are slits in the shells, and the shells are hollow, so what do they sound like? Like putting shells over your ears. Seashells. But the shells just snap on, so I snapped them off and stuffed them with foam, and now they do what I hoped they would do in the first place. Meaning I turned a 3-star product into a 5-star product, so I gave it 4 stars. And the foam I recycled from the dumpster at work, so I'm happy.

I bought this thing to control Traktor Pro. So far I like it, and customizing traktor for it has been straight-forward.

It comes with some software ) that I really wish would work well. It looks just like the controller I mean exactly. It's got nice features, but it's been *very* unstable for me crashed my whole computer like nothing else. Also the program runs on Windows only, and i prefer Mac. I tested their program out on windows xp in parallels vm, so you may get different results.

It's got a nice layout and amount of controls, however the bottom section doesn't all match up with traktor perfectly, so i'm still working out what those buttons should do.

It has cheap components no surprise there but they're ok. Buttons have positive click, but kind of cheap feel. Faders were a little gritty out of the box, but i gave them a workout and are smooth enough, now. Knobs feel ok. The jog platters are actually pretty good they're not touch-sensitive, but they' super smooth and glide; they keep spinning for a bit when you give them a shove. If you're looking for butter-smooth faders, nice buttons, etc, you're looking in the wrong price-bracket; but these are fine if you're not picky.

Overall i'm happy i bought this. It was a bit of a risk, as i found no reviews for it. I think it's worth it, so far.
