I'm surprised nobody has done a review on this. This amp sounds great. This amp has a great tube sound with the 12AX7 preamp and boy is it loud. The clean sound is great and the overdrive with the shift button is excellent for classic rock. For heavy metal, I run this through a Digitech RP255 and I get endless tonal capabilities. I reccommend this over any solid state amp. It is a steal for $100.

Blows my digital Berginger out of the water. For 15 watts, this thing will vibrate some walls and floors. For the price it beats out even higher class tube amps with effects. I've been playing around with this thing for three days now and I have no complaints. It is solidly constructed, portable, and capable of filling an apartment with quality sound. So far I have been able to match tones to Black Sabbath, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rush, Spoon, Radiohead, Chet Atkins, almost Hendrix on Hey Joe, and Jack White. And it didn't take much. And I used no effects. Just a Hagstrom Viking plugged into it.

It will not do death metal--without bringing your own effects to the fold. But it does classic tube drive admirably. Good warmth and fuzz if you want it, and also good fat clean tones if you want it. Brilliant little amp.

I think tube and solid state each offer benefits--obviously, or they wouldn't make both. But a tube preamp (like here) with the stable output of a solid state amp works in this package. You can pay a lot more for all tube and not best the quality sound of this practice amp.

I also like that on such a budget model with a tube they included a nice headphone out option. The input for jamming along is nice too, if you need that. I personally like to crank the stereo up and play along, but sometimes people are sleeping, so who knows.

This amp offers enough settings to be truly versatile (including a mid filter cut) and the guts to go snarling Texas boogie or elegant composure to render beautiful clean jazz or country tones. And just about everything in between.

Highly recommended. I expect the sound quality will progress as the tube is played in as with all things tube ultimately do.

Note: I purchased it on Amazon (best price I found new), but played around in a music store before deciding.

I have both the Fostex HP P1 and the combination ALO Continental/Cyperlab Algorhythm Solo. So I believe that I can compare both. The Fostex is an exceptionally well designed piece. It is good looking and relatively small. It is bigger than an Ipod, but will comfortably fit in a pocket with an Ipod. It is an all in one piece. As such, the battery is called upon to do a lot. The charge does not last very long. I think I get about 5-7 hours from a single charge. It comes with a USB cable and appears to be designed to be charged from the bus on your computer through USB. No problem. It takes longer to charge, but you can simply do it overnight.

With in ear monitors, the Fostex is a splendid performer. An Ipod with recordings in "loss-less" setting or better is simply deadly. I just about never listen to an Ipod (outside of a gym setting) without either the ALO Continental portable headphone amplifier/Cypher Labs Algorhythm Solo DAC/digital transport combination or the Fostex HP-P1. The performance enhancement is revolutionary.

However, the Fostex does not have the juice to make an inefficient headphone sing. For instance, the Sennheiser 650 or Audese LCD2 sounds much better on the ALO/Cypher Labs Algorhythm Solo combo. The Fostex sounds fantastic on probably all earphones and many efficient headphones. The ALO is two pieces and therefore is both bigger and heavier. It is not as convenient for truly portable use. I have the JH Audio-13 and the Fostex drives them extraordinarily well as does the ALO/Cypher Labs Algorhythm Solo.

I have to say that I often prefer (slightly) the sound signature of the ALO/Cypherlab combination. It competes very favorably with an excellent desktop Dac and headphone amplifier. While the ALO combination can fit in a big pocket, it is too big to be truly comfortable or to be easily portable.

In conclusion, the ALO combination will fit all headphones wherein the Fostex will probably drive some headphones well. The Fostex will not make an inefficient headphone truly sing. The Fostex costs approximately half of the cost of the ALO Continental/Cypherlabs Algorhythm Solo. They are both superb performers.

Post Script

I have found that the Fostex HP-P1 has a wonderful synergy with the Shure 530 and Westone 4. I also really love the Fostex with the Sennheiser IE8, Audeo 232, and the Sony MDR 1000. The sound signature is full with great sound across the board. There is plenty of power for a full bass response, albeit tight and not exaggerated. The rest of the sound spectrum sounds great. The synergy of the Fostex and any of these really read earphone monitors is astounding--really astounding.

The charge lasts for 3-5 hours. I know that a this is not as long as all of us we would like to have, but this one gadget is: 1) an Ipod transport which in essence converts the Ipod into a harddrive or an independent stereo component (which of course disengages both the DAC and amplifier on the Ipod itself); 2) a DAC far superior to the DAC in the Ipod itself; and (3)headphone amplifier which is the sole means of controlling the volume once you have bypassed the DAC and headphone jack on the Ipod. Most of the great portable headphone amplifiers last much longer on a single charge. This is especially true of the Ray Samuels Audio, Leckerton, TTVJ, and Headamp Pico portable amps. These other portable amps are fabulous and keep a charge a lot longer, but then are not DACs or Ipod transports.

Considering that the Fostex HP-P1 is a great piece of equipment and at approximately $650.00, it is really a good buy!!

Let us begin:

WHY:

It is believed that iPods are made for the great unwashed A Lossy digital signal is put through a second rate DAC, then a third rate amplifier and the signal is finally made available to your earbuds.

DIGITAL AND ANALOG STUFF:

An iPod plays a digital signal. The digital signal goes into a DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter). The analog signal from the DAC is then Amplified. (EXAMPLE: MP3>DAC>Amp> Headphones).

The Apple Dock Connector can bypass either the Internal Amp (Analog Line Out (ALO)) or bypass the DAC and the Amp (Digital Line Out (DLO)).

An ALO is used by many third party amp makers to provide a cleaner signal to the headphones. (EXAMPLE: MP3>DAC>Apple Dock Analog Line Out>Third Party Amp>Headphones).

A DLO sends the digital signal out of the iPod to be both converted to analog and amplified. (EXAMPLE: MP3>Apple Dock Digital Out>Third Party DAC>Third Party Amp>Headphones).

FOSTEX HP-P1:

Just about every Apple dock connector cable is analog out.

One of the few exceptions is the Fostex HP-P1. It uses a proprietary Apple Dock Connector that is digital line out. An iPod makes the digital signal available to the HP-P1. The digital to analog and the amplification is done within the Fostex.

MAKING SENSE:

To justify buying the HP-P1, your source MUST be Lossless and the headphones should have a MSRP North of $300.00. Anything less is a total waste of money. Sorry.

REVIEW:

Pros: In many respects, this is as good as it gets with portable music.

Cons:

Weight and Size: The Fostex HP-P1 is half again as big and heavy as an Apple Classic.

Cost: Even with a street price of $650.00, it is still a lot of money.

No Music Shaping: Remember, the signal coming out of the iPod is digital. You cannot run it through EQ.

Battery: HP-P1 will provide a day of "normal" listening (5 to 8 hours), but will run dry long before a players.

Amp: The amp will not drive high ohm headphones with authority.

Using this with a new Ipod Classic and Ultrasone Edition 8 headphones; the sound is awesome. First time I can really hear longer decay of notes, better separation in a chorus, and more voices within the chorus. More separation and depth of bass. The construction is superb; the volume knob extending out is helpful with adjusting the volume from within a case; It trickle charges your IOS device, so you basically have to charge one item only, if you leave the ipod plugged in. Quality construction and performance!

The sound quality is great and does a great job at isolating sound. However I am doubtful of its lifetime as the headset seems quite fragile. I'll probably come back to remove one or two stars if it breaks.

I read a review here that the color of their headphones influenced their review......say what?!?!? I have had some wonderful headphones that were great except they were uncomfortable after 30 minutes. I bought these and IMMEDIATELY experienced a lightweight, sturdy, (although plastic it is sturdy....but plastic IS lightweight)crisp sounding headphones. When people say the sound is muddy or the mid range is not good, I would suggest they adjust the equalizer on their device. The adjustable equalizer on a device is there to adjust the different types of output devices. Any headphone cannot make a poorly tuned device sound much better, unless the quality is poor across the range.

Ok. Now for the person that understands that some fine tuning is needed for quality, I marvel at the range of sounds that feel like they are just to the side, behind or ahead of me. A concert sounds like I am sitting in the middle of the instruments. For the price, the positive comments I get from others and the perfect sound, I will keep buying and recommending these for others. These headphones actually will transmit the pressure of the fingers on the strings from a cello or guitar.

A side note: I work with equipment that are constantly setting off sounds and noises that indicate the condition they are in. I listen to the smallest detail to make sure the equipment is in good running condition. I know what good sound is and even the smallest pop would bother me.

I actually bought a pair of these on ebay and have rarely used them. Tested them again today and I will agree the audio quality is very good when the source has an EQ (in my case, Samsung Note using Power Amp app). They appear heavy but are actually pretty lightweight. I compared them to my Go Groove Air Band and noticed more audio detail in the Pros. Only recommendation for others who are not satisfied is make sure your source has an EQ to hear the full benefit of sound from these and other headphones. Final tip: the more you use them, the more your ears get accustomed to the audio production. Sturdy and solid sound for the $$$.

cons:

-uncomfortable. The whole headphone had a very "plastic" feeling to it

-poorer quality of sound compared to many of the other headphones on the market, namely the Sennheiser HD 202. Even with an amp it sounded weak.

-cord may be a little too long for some people?

-design seems prone to breaking

I have a pair of Samson CH700 earphones and still use them. After 3 months, the plastic around the hinge at the bottom on one side of the headband broke, but I was able to repair it with a small piece of wood. They are very comfortable and give good quality sound.

I needed another pair of earphones and went upscale a notch to the Grado Labs SR60. These are "open back" and so eliminate the echo of the common closed back type like the Samson above. There is a noticeable improvement in fidelity, more than I expected. These cost three times a much so I suppose they should be better.

If you can spring for the extra money the Grado Labs models would be my choice.

First the sound quality is great not shrill with a great amount of bass these blow away all my under 50$ headphones from sony and koss i have a couple of these smaller type full size headphones for outdoor use like mowing my yard going for a run or riding my bike ect and these are my go to pair now for being active.if i am home i go for my mdrv6 or akgs for a studio refrences but the samsons are not too far off and would do the job.the build quality is good but my ear pads only lasted about three weeks before they flaked apart i took my pads off my sony mdrv150 which fit perfectly on the ch70's and have not flaked a year later,your mileage may vary had the ear pads lasted a few months i would rate these 5 stars. Buy these if your looking for a great all arounder just dont expect the world for the price asked.i have not been disapointed by samson unlike other major brands.

We purchased this keyboard for our 15 year old daughter. You cannot go wrong with Yamaha products and this is an excellent keyboard for the price. The sound quality is wonderful and the options are plentiful. The only drawback is that the headphones that come with it only play in one ear...but that is easily remedied by purchasing an stereo-to-stereo adapter. Otherwise, excellent bang for the buck with this keyboard.

In general, I like it, but it has warts. The biggest issue, which was mentioned differently in other reviews was the hum & noise when you're monitoring a live recording through headphones. The weird thing is that this noise doesn't appear on the finished digital file. Since I'm not taking this into the field, I'll live with this odd behavior because the other features be the heck out of all of the other USB mixers in this price range (here's a hint: there aren't any, or at least their weren't any when I bought this). Before I got my cushy desk job, I moonlighted as an A2 so part of me wants to cringe at the noise in my headset; however, in an earlier life I worked with the old Hitachi HR100 1" VTRs, and they had the same problem except for about 100 times more money. I can live with this, and it gets a 3 only because of the monitoring issue...otherwise this little baby excellent.

Pros: Great value-2 channel mixer, interface, preeamps w/ phantom power all-in-one for around $80. You can even record a drum kit (I use two matched pencil condenser mics) using the two channels and get pretty good results. Also, the metal case feels pretty durable.

Cons: You might be one of the many who will have to overcome the noise issue (see below). Also, there are no "Mid" EQ knobs, just "Lo" and "Hi."

**Noise Issue Solution**

After desperately trying to find the magic gain, level, and headphone volume setting combination to get rid of the pesky noise issue, I turned to the audio properties of my Windows 7 laptop, which was the key to the solution..

So, right click on the speaker icon in the taskbar > Select "Recording Devices" > Select the "Recording" tab. Ensure the checkmark is on "3-USB Audio Codec."

Now, right click on the "3-USB Audio Codec" option and select "Properties." Go to the "Levels" tab. Set the microphone level all the way down (I have mine set to 5) and voila, you can now comfortably adjust the gain, level, and headphone volume knobs on the Alesis interface with ease, and your recordings and monitoring should no longer be plagued with a nasty noise.

Use it for camtasia and webex recordings with USB audio to the computer and send a main out to a video camera as a line level to the video camera. USB audio levels are consistant across the many pc I've used it with; this is more a function of the Windows driver, but a relief because dell laptop soundcards suck and I'm thrilled to be able to bypass them. If you barely let your levels hit unity on the board indicator, then you'll get maximum levels on the computer input, but be careful... the instant it slightly flickers into the yellow then you will be clipping your audio. This USB audio gives low noise floors which is nice when bypassing crappy laptop soundcards.

con: no aux send, but you could use the phone jack as an alternate output to a laptop or other device that requires mic levels and use a left or right main out for headphones.

If know I only need two mic inputs and can get away without a Mackie I love using this Alesis.

I bought this small usb interface/mixer (Alesis Multimix 4) to allow me to digitize a set of cassette tapes (interviews and other research materials), and to be able to add voice over introductory comments using a dynamic microphone. I'd read reviews beforehand, some of which mentioned hiss or other noise. I assumed this might be idiosyncratic, and bought this unit. I set it up, very pleased with its looks and solid metal construction. Its a very nicely made piece of hardware.

However, as soon as I powered it up (it has a small transformer and external power) and attached headphones (Sony MDR 7506 -professional quality), I could hear a clearly audible background hiss. I thought this might just be audible in the headphones, until I made test recordings using my microphone (a Shure SM58). Each test recording has a clearly audible background hiss or hum, which I could not get rid of no matter how I adjusted the gain and other settings. There is also a faint high pitched whine audible in some of the recordings. I had a friend who owns his own recording studio come over and test this unit with me. We concluded that while it looks great, this usb mixer must be made with inferior components, most likely the mic preamp, but possibly other components too.

Reluctantly, I returned it -with regrets as it seemed the perfect item, great looking and the price at about $78 was good. I subsequently bought a Yamaha AudioGram 6 (again through Amazon) and of course immediately tested it in the same way I did the Alesis. I was relieved to find that it performed flawlessly, very little extraneous noise (virtually none when just connecting the headphones) -just what I was hoping for. The Yamaha unit is about a half inch wider than the Alesis mixer, and has a plastic housing rather than metal (which I preferred). It is also quite a bit lighter in weight, but solid enough. I would hope the makers of the Alesis MultiMix 4 pay attention to this and other similar reviews and re-engineer their product to get rid of the noise it introduces. They'd have a winner if they did so.

As far as features and price, this seemed like an excellent deal. Connected via USB, WinXP detected it and all was installed without any external drivers etc. Everything is labeled clearly. The footprint is half the size of a 13" laptop. Decent metal construction.

It has one huge problem. There's a very annoying hissing sound even when the gain is only 1/3 up. It also adds some crackles to the recording. If you want a clean recording, this won't do.

As for the output, the same hissing noise is still present even when there is no Mic connected; just headphones. I can't recommend the product with so much noise at low settings.

I will return it and find something less noisy.
