I'm surprised nobody has done a review on this. This amp sounds great. This amp has a great tube sound with the 12AX7 preamp and boy is it loud. The clean sound is great and the overdrive with the shift button is excellent for classic rock. For heavy metal, I run this through a Digitech RP255 and I get endless tonal capabilities. I reccommend this over any solid state amp. It is a steal for $100.

I wish I had found this earlier. Like last poster said" Buy this instead of any digital amp for your first amp." This amp is basic on dials but very big on sound. Blows my digital Berginger out of the water. For 15 watts, this thing will vibrate some walls and floors. For the price it beats out even higher class tube amps with effects. I've been playing around with this thing for three days now and I have no complaints. It is solidly constructed, portable, and capable of filling an apartment with quality sound. So far I have been able to match tones to Black Sabbath, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rush, Spoon, Radiohead, Chet Atkins, almost Hendrix on Hey Joe, and Jack White. And it didn't take much. And I used no effects. Just a Hagstrom Viking plugged into it.

It will not do death metal--without bringing your own effects to the fold. But it does classic tube drive admirably. Good warmth and fuzz if you want it, and also good fat clean tones if you want it. Brilliant little amp.

I think tube and solid state each offer benefits--obviously, or they wouldn't make both. But a tube preamp (like here) with the stable output of a solid state amp works in this package. You can pay a lot more for all tube and not best the quality sound of this practice amp.

I also like that on such a budget model with a tube they included a nice headphone out option. The input for jamming along is nice too, if you need that. I personally like to crank the stereo up and play along, but sometimes people are sleeping, so who knows.

This amp offers enough settings to be truly versatile (including a mid filter cut) and the guts to go snarling Texas boogie or elegant composure to render beautiful clean jazz or country tones. And just about everything in between.

Highly recommended. I expect the sound quality will progress as the tube is played in as with all things tube ultimately do.

Note: I purchased it on Amazon (best price I found new), but played around in a music store before deciding.

The SCL4 should replace my E2 and I was unsure whether I should spend the extra money. After a 4 weeks use period I can only recommend these earphones. Crystal clear sound, perfect impedance match to MP3 player output stage, sturdy metal housing, small but perfectly shaped for convenient wear.

Two warnings for potential buyers:

1. sound quality heavily depends on the fit. The foam sleeves that come with the SCL4 are perfect, much better than the ones for the E2. Squeeze them properly before inserting, and allow for 10sec to expand them properly and produce a tight fit. Don't use too small sleeves.

2. These earphones will mercilessly reveal deficiencies of the sound souce! Don't blame the phones.

All in all, an excellent set of earphones. I've been a long time user of Shure E3, and I was waiting for the price of SCL4 to drop a little.

In comparison to E3, SCL4 really enhances the high and low range, maybe a little to much. If one is into good mid-range (i.e., vocals, lead guitars, etc.), E3 may sound more "true".

But at this price range, it's all about the listener's preference. For rock and jazz, you may want to boost high and low range sound anyway. Depending on the mixing level, some high range sound such as hats and cymbals may even sound enhanced or artificial. That is how "fatigue" sets in, and you definitely don't want that when you are stuck in a plane. Like anything though, you will get used to it somehow. And the differences are not something that you can not overcome with equalizer settings. (I used "Latin" setting on the iPod.)

When I first did the A/B test, SCL4 definitely stood out. But one may say that SCL4 may sound too "sweet", and there is such thing as too much sweetness in sound, as one may get tired of it.

Surprisingly, the bigger difference is in the type of attachments that come with the earphones. I've tried them all, and the yellow foam is the best, no contest (for both E3 and SCL4). I wouldn't even bother trying other options, and they do sell extra foams if they get dirty.

One more tip: It is true that the sound gets better as you play the set. If you bought a new set, just leave it on for a few days until the set is fully broken in.

With the foam attachment, you won't even hear a crying baby next to you, and the sound of music would be better than some expensive sound system. I never fly without it.

Update (April 3, 2009)

After a few months of use, the set is fully broken in, and it sounds even better than when I wrote the first review. I use it constantly when I fly, and sometimes I never take it off for 5 hour flight. No sound fatigue, or no pain in your ear when used with foam set. I'm very happy with this product.

I had returned my E4C's just 2 days short of the two tear warranty expiration because the wires, when worn over the ears, had been cracking. I really like the sound of these headphones. They are very clear and fit well with the right ear foams.

I have had one issue with all of the Shure headphones. The cord that goes over the ear wears out and the cable starts to tear and then the sound goes out. I wish they would find a way to reinforce that area as these are not low cost headphones. One plus is that Shure has a very good warranty service.

One of Shure's trade marks is that they offer "Legendary Performance" and I believe that this simple phrase is an understatement. It has been over four years since I first bought a pair of in ear headphones from Shure and have been very pleased. My first pair were the E4G's (which this model replaced) and had them for over three years until one of the earphones stopped working properly. Didn't bother me to much since I had used them well over a thousand times and was always impressed at their performance. Sent them in to be repaired ($109 since it was out of warranty) and they promptly sent me back a brand new pair of SCL4's. These have been a great pair of headphones, but unfortunately after three months of careful use, the same problem with one of the earphones occurred. Even though this was frustrating, their customer service was phenomenal and four business days after sending in my headphones for free repair I received another brand new pair no questions asked. Every experience I have had with this company has been pleasant and I guarantee you will love the headphones. Yes they are very pricey, but if you are like me and enjoy complete sound isolation without looking foolish with huge cans around your ears, these are the way to go. I live in a college dorm and am frequently taking the trains around Chicago and when I have these headphones in my ears at a relatively low volume I am in my own world and can't hear loud floor mates screaming down the hall or the deafening noise produced by the elevated trains in Chicago. You are going to love these if you buy them!

I started buying this piece for a trip i was having (traveled to the mexican jungle for about 2 months and with no electricity) ... i was carrying a semihollow guitar with me and i was afraid i couldn't take all the juice out of it without carrying something electrical; i wasn't expecting much.

When i actually got there, i realised i had bought a jewel... the sound is excellent (without being something out of this world) for something that fits in your pocket. The battery life impressed me (and i'm an electronics engineer myself), i could survive with 3 pairs of (AAA) batteries (one being the ones that came with it). It accompanied me for 2 months on blues, classic rock and even some progressive stuff.

After i returned to the city i was surprised i couldn't take it down, i've got four guitars (one custom made, a telecaster, the Epiphone dot i took to the jungle and a PRS CE 24 maple top), i use it for playing late at night with any of these models and live happy with it. It finally made a quick jam/improvisation easy, without having tu plug yourself to so much stuff or twisting knobs to play, just plug, slide and rock.

I'm surprised it actually took the beating of travelling to the jungle, the moisture (i had to wait 7 days for the rain to stop for example), the heat and the dust, still i would advice any buyers to treat it carefully since it's shaped like a leverage i think any physical stress would break the plug easily.

The pros:

Excellent sound for the price.

Incredibly long battery life.

can handle distorted and clean tones, you just have to play a little with the dials.

The cons:

Imposible to use pedals with this thing, so your gear setup will be limited (again, seems to be a travelling accessory)

The finish is not the best (everything is plastic, what seems to be a net in the picture is actually a sticker, the VOX logo is also plastic, colours wear off quickly).

It doesn't fit a friends guitar (he's got an Ibanez S, the plug doesn't fit and i'm not going to drill my amPlug for him)

Just received. Includes starter batteries(+). Love it. Sounds just like my old AC 30 (way back). Good power output, good tone and gain control. MP3 plugs in with a barely noticeable hum. Works fine for playing along with the MP3 songs. Fun as all get out for late night solo jams. Plastic case (-) will not hold up under any abuse. Use with caution, but highly recommend for the price and sound.

My long search for the perfect guitar miniamp may be nearly at an end. It has volume, tone and gain dials and a two-position fat switch. I have never played the Vox train stack but the headphone version has all I need for those quieter moments. The clean setting sounds warm on my Fralin PAFs and my Fender72 reissue. With the gain up, the clean setting gives me the bluesy sound I hoped for. With fat switch on very little gain produces a nice smokey sound. The best thing is I don't have to crank up my Super Reverb to concert strength and use a pedal. It beats out my PocketRocket, my Fender mini and my Danelectro mini.

I can't say enough good things about this little device. First of all, it has a very nice 1x12 cabinet emulated sound. This of course will be subjective based on your individual headphones. If you have a good set, you will notice the depth and clarity immediately. To address some areas that others have wrote about: This is NOT a toy by any means, no more so than a tuner or metronome. It is a practice device or an amateur recording device if you use the headphone as a line out. It is not meant to shake the walls or pull a Spinal Tap. Some reviewers wrote in about how the gain doesn't work. Well if they had taken a minute to actually test the device they would have noticed the fun little FX switch on the side. On the actual Night Train head or Lil Nigh Train for that matter, there are two selectable settings "Bright" and "Thick". The Night Train Amplug is the exact same set up. Turn it to the "On" Position and this is the "Bright Setting" The Gain control does not provide gain so much as it does some sparkle and chime to a clean channel (think Sweet Home Alabama). If you click it to the "FX" position this is the "Thick" setting. Crank the gain here and you are going to get some nice crunchy overdrive all the way to rich distortion (Think Back in Black). Both settings are equal smooth and rich as long as you know what style you are trying to achieve. I really like the Amplug Night Train, vox has made a really nice practice tool here. The only thing that i can think that is a bit of a downside is the price. At $39.99 it is a bit steep, but if your goal is to practice without disturbing others or just enjoy a variety of the "VOX" sounds then it is pretty reasonable. Definitely more so than purchasing a amplifier. If in the end, the price is still too much a an investment for you, I would suggest the Danelectro Honeytone. Used the same way (with headphones) it can produce some really nice vintage sounds as well and at only $19.99, is a steal. It can be modified to push a 1x12 or 2x12 cabinet (Yes you heard me right and it does it well). Either way if you are a musician beginner or advanced and you are looking for a nice practice tool or fun little recording device, I would highly recommend you take a chance on the Night Train.

Not happy with the sound. The clean sound is very low. The overdrive is nothing to get excited about. Save your money, or get a different on that this. But I'm not going to buy another of these.

I'm not Harry I'm his daughter lol but I'm very pleased by the violin. It came with everything it said, shipped off and wrapped up nicely, came on time.. just awesome. Things you should know is that the pegs do go out of tune sometimes sp you gotta constantly tune the violin, the violin is plastic, the rosin is okay I suppose (first timer), the bow is complicated a bit. It seems like the tigher you make it, the more it's close to the rod, but whenever I want a space between it, the hair aren't tight enough. Still works though and in the beginning, the bow must be rosined A LOT in order to get a clean sound. But overall, I love it! (Also, you may have to redo the strings as well, like reloop them and one more thing. The bridge doesn't have the little dents. You have to make them or someone else. Came with instructions as well for the violin. Does not come with Shouler Rest). HAPPY! THANK YOU!

It wasn't clear to me from looking at the picture, but the cable is built like heavy gauge speaker cable with a separate left and right cable joined together, so it was twice as thick as I expected. If you go to Monoprice's website, you can easily find they make a "25ft Premium 3.5mm Stereo Male to 3.5mm Stereo Female 22AWG Extension Cable (Gold Plated) Black" which they describe as "The 3.5mm (1/8") stereo TRS connector is more commonly known as the Headphone Jack on portable mp3 players and mobile phones. This cable features a male 3.5mm stereo (TRS) plug on one end and a female 3.5mm stereo jack on the other end, each with molded connector housings and strain relief boots. Each connector is gold-plated to ensure smooth, corrosion-free connections. The cable is made of heavy-duty coaxial cable for each conductor. The conductors are 22AWG and each conductor is shield to prevent EMI or RFI interference from entering your audio system. Anyway, I got a plain cable in a plain ziplock bag without any identifiers of who made it, with a single cylindrical (not asymmetric shaped dual) cable, and with both plug and jack that are clearly different from what Monoprice and Amazon both show on their website.

I have written the Amazon vendor, and asked them to send me the correct item. Even if they do, I'll never use that vendor again.

I knew that other folks wrote that they got what seems to be the Monoprice cable, and others wrote that also had been ripped off. Amazon, please make your vendors supply what is described: what's happening here is sort of like ordering a RollsRoyce, and sometimes getting a Yugo. Not cool.

Update 23JAN2013: The vendor refunded my purchase price, & said I could keep the cable. So I got a cheap cable for free (minus the hassle factor of multiple e-mails, and them wanting photos of what I got, and wasted time).

I reordered the MP cable, as I want a heavy-duty one, this time buying it from Monoprice (who sells their cables at the Amazon website) and the correct one just arrived. it's in a clear plastic bag with the word Monoprice & various codes and a scancode & "Made in China" on the tag, and the cable itself says Monoprice in fine print.

If you get a cable that doesn't say Monoprice, I'd bet it ain't Monoprice.

Extra heavy duty! This is a great product; the cable is thickly insulated; and the connectors on either end are made to take punishment. I use mine everyday and have been dragging it around a few months now and the cable and the connectors have remained undamaged. I tried a cheaper alternative that had lighter duty insulation and end connectors and wound up spending more to replace them. Don't do what I did; buy this well made cable and avoid the hassle and expense of having to buy more then once.

Lastly the cable has provided a flawless connection to my equipment; what more can you ask.

I bought these for a set of Yamaha EPH-50BL earbuds, hoping that they would fit, and much to my surprise, they did. this leads me to believe that they would fit on most, if not all standard earbuds.

I use them while running, because normal buds just aren't enough to keep the headphones in my ears. These fit that bill perfectly. I could run a marathon and only have to adjust them 3 or 4 times.

These headphones are obviously very cute. Definitely geared towards the girly clientele. I am personally not a big "girly girl" but these are pretty fun. The sound of them is awesome, you can feel the bass, which normally with ear buds the sound is pretty crumby. And of course, who doesn't love having the microphone so you can seamlessly use your phone and listen to music.

Great combination and a great deal! The only thing I would say is that they should make some designs that are a little less pink.

This is my second rewrite of this review Jan 3, 2010. Sometimes a piece of equipment will have a design defect that only becomes a problem in some circumstances. This headphone amplifier sometimes acts as if it has no input decoupling. If you are lucky and it likes the output impedance of your DVD player, sound quality will be superb. Assuming this is the case, the only remaining issue will be whether the output power is adequate. AKG K 240, and 271 will put out about 98 dB SPL at the clipping point where distortion begins. Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO 80 ohm also work fine. This is loud enough for me, in fact having more power is a danger in my opinion. Rock fans who like 115 dB SPL will find 98 dB SPL totally lame. AKG K 240 monitor phones made to the old 600 ohm standard will not be loud enough for anyone.

When this amplifier is connected to certain cable and source impedances, supersonic feedback appears to occur. As you turn up the volume at some point the volume will drop suddenly. Others have reported hum or static. This is a rare problem that I have seen only a few times in 45+ years of messing with electronics.

BOTTOM LINE: This may work fine, as it does for me when I use it with my Sony DVP-NS55P or cheap Philco DVD player. It does not work on an LG player which works fine with other amps. The problem is stable over time, and whacking it around a bit has no effect at all, so it is not a loose connection inside. Lack of decoupling leads to unpredictable performance.

TECH NOTE: The theoretical high frequency limit for a CD is 22050 Hz. For a DVD LPCM audio output the theoretical limit is 24000 Hz, assuming that the LPCM recording is mastered at a sampling rate of 48,000 Hz or higher. SACD is higher yet. In practice the upper limit for a CD is about 20,000 Hz, few people have enough hearing at this frequency to notice any loss of higher frequencies. AES (Audio Engineering Soc.) "working group" calls the CD (when properly recorded) transparent to almost all listeners. Back in the 1970s David Hafler sold amplifier kits that had an elegant output filter set to 30,000 Hz. Input circuits were designed to be very stable even when supersonic frequencies from radio and TV stations leaked into the audio input. A small number of extreme audiophiles found fault with this limited response. In response, some amplifiers are designed to work at much higher frequencies, resulting in unstable operation. I for one do not like finding 100 megahertz FM radio signals at an amplifier output. Decoupling inputs and outputs above 30,000 Hz has never, in my 45+ years of setting up stereo systems, caused a customer to complain.

UPDATE: May 21, 2013. I have two units, one has developed a dead spot in the level control leaving three fully functioning headphone outputs. the second unit is fine.

I own two of these units, I use one for my home PC to mix outputs to my speakers and two different sets of headphones (one is a headset), and the other for my audio studio. Both units have serious problems with hum and crackle. They are very poor amplifiers distorting the output in a way that makes listening to music quite unpleasant at times.

This a great little amp and it gets a very good review in Sound on Sound. I did have problems with hum and crackle as has been reported in other reviews, but that was down to my having a poor stereo cable connection. I was using a cheapo 3.5 mm jack to 3.5 mm jack cable with a 1/4 inch jack adapter and that's what caused the humming and buzzing.

I since bought a good quality stereo cable 3.5 mm to 1/4 inch jack and the humming and crackling issues have disappeared completely, leaving me to enjoy my AKG 271 mkII cans in all their pristine sonic glory.

You'd be hard pressed to find a better headphone amp for 55 quid (or bucks).

Overall I am a happy customer.

I really like this Samson 4 channel Headphone amp!

It has a small footprint therefore does not take up a lot of space. the amp has a clean sound output and will get very loud and covers the whole sound spectrum very nicely. My only complaint with the unit is it does not have an on/off switch.

Got one on eBay for $25. Works great. Sounds great. I use it with my Grado SR325i which is also a great headphone if your looking in the $300 range.

This was admittedly an upgrade from an audio component (an ASUS Xonar Essence STX sound card) that sat within a few of our audio-dedicated computer workstations, and although the Xonar Essence STX was a very, very competent piece of audio gear for its form factor, there was absolutely no comparison with respect to the sheer control, clarity, extension and unblemished sound of the Benchmark DAC1 USB.

We auditioned the Benchmark DAC1 USB next to an Ayre Acoustics QB9, which is another phenomenal piece of equipment (both pieces have been very, very favorably reviewed in many audio magazines and online resources) but the bottom line was that our workstations needed the multiple digital inputs available to the Benchmark DAC1 USB, as well as the dual headphone outputs, none of which are available Ayre Acoustics QB9.

We gave both the Benchmark DAC1 USB and the Ayre Acoustics QB9 100 hours burn-in apiece using pink noise tracks and various instrumental and vocal CD tracks played through a Musical Fidelity M1 CDT transport, an older CAL Audio Delta transport, and native LG Blueray burners attached to our computer workstations, and then auditioned each unit with Have, AudioQuest and Kimber digital inputs via the USB, AES and coax inputs of the Benchmark DAC1 USB, and via the USB input of the Ayre Acoustics QB9, since the Ayer only accepts USB input. The speakers used for auditioning were Mackie HR624 MK2's and Neumann KH 120's, all connected to the DACs via AudioQuest King Cobra XLR or Kimber Hero XLR interconnects. For lower-end bass testing, we also tested both DACs using both a Velodyne MiniVee and Focal Sub6 subwoofers in conjunction with the aforementioned studio monitors.

In terms of the sonic landscape, the extension and control of the lower registers was phenomenal for both the Benchmark DAC1 USB and the Ayre Acoustics QB9, as was the breathtaking clarity of the midrange and cleanness of the upper registers. Some of us thought that the Ayre Acoustics QB9 may have had just a very slight advantage on a few occasions when it came to the decay of notes in certain source material, but this was not uniformly agreed by everyone, and even by those who thought it to be an advantage, there were times when their vote shifted to the Benchmark DAC1 USB when other source materials were played.

In the end, however (at least for us) the slightly greater openness sometimes heard in the Ayre Acoustics QB9 was nowhere near enough incentive to rationalize the Ayre Acoustics QB9 costing more than twice as much as the Benchmark DAC1 USB. In addition, the Benchmark DAC1 USB had a notably smaller footprint, which made it ideal for the workstations where it was to be deployed. The footprint wasn't the ultimate deciding factor by any real means, but we thought it worth noting for those who may be looking for a USB-connected DAC for their home setups.

In all, the Benchmark DAC1 USB is a giant killer representative of the best that digital audio has to offer. Very highly recommended.

The Benchmark DAC1 has changed that forever because the clock is so rock-solid that it never ever loses synch on playback. That, plus the obvious 20% bump in audio quality, makes it worth every penny.

I have just purchased my USB1 DAC....What an improvement over my creative titanium hd sound card. This unit has a good amount of flexibility,and the Head phone amp is quite good especially for hi z headphones. USB1 Even gives you a choice of Headphone jacks . Light but well designed unit, My biggest pro is that the unit has a very transparent output and does not color your music.

Also you can increase the volume by removing the jumpers (10db pad) and then give the headphone amp tremendous volume for your cans. XLR out can also be increased by moving the head jumpers to a different position.

It seems to work as advertised. It has 8 sets of inputs: 4 mono/mic, and 4 stereo. It only has 1/4-inch jacks, so 1/4-to-RCA adapters are useful for connecting some audio equipment.

I learned that mics only seem to work when connected via XLR jacks. The volume of a mic connected to a 1/4 jack is very low and basically unusable. All other audio equipment that I connected via the stereo 1/4 jacks was fine.

I personally did not have a good experience with this mixer. If you are explicitly using this thing for mellow home recording, I think it is a viable option. I tried to record drums with it into garage band, and the levels were too low to process, even for low quality scratch tracks. Then I tried to use it for acoustic gigs and that's when the power chord blew out. Up until that point it was a sub par mixer due to low output volume but after the power chord stopped working, I got sour. I think for some people this could potentially be useful, but if you plan on doing anything legit with it, you need to buy a legit mixer. I tried to gamble, and I lost. Maybe you will win!
