Im new at this but i absolutely love this piece....received it and cannot believe the features. It makes making beats very easy and professional....the use of sampling any sound you have ever heard used it unreal and gives you unlimited music production opportunity ....... i also like the DAW software is that comes along with it...very simple

I bought this through Sweetwater.com, great customer service and support.

I'm currently using Logic 9 with a number of VSTs running the MPC software as a plugin. I also use the NI Maschine 1.8

I've been researching this alot and finally made the purchase, being a happy NI Maschine user I was skeptical and so far and not 100% satisfied but here it goes.

Pros:

The MPC studio has some really crispy sounds, very glossy instruments. Thats pretty much all you can ask for when using software based samples. The pads feel good and are firm, same as the buttons and jog wheels.

This thing is super light, I really like that i can carry it around and hold it with one hand with ease.

Cons:

Unit has to be on and plugged in to access the MPC software as a plugin or stand alone this is almost a deal breaker, I should be able to use the VST inside my DAW (Logic) to make edits and arrangements without the MPC plugged in. NOTE: this is possible with the NI Maschine.

Software interface isn't very intuitive as I thought it would be. The step sequencer is ok but the other edit features are boring......needs a makeover.

I'm assuming that the MPC Studio software just needs a few updates, like Native Instruments needed with Maschine to get all the kinks out and satisfy their users. But I feel like Akai might be a little stubborn with this line.

No one wants to sequence inside of another VST or piece of software, We want to sequence inside of our DAW. This is a major gripe with Maschine and now the MPC Studio, MIDI mode is lacking bigtime

As of right now Maschine > MPC Studio

UPDATE: 5 months later, I haven't used the MPC Studio since writing this review....sometimes use the sounds as .WAVS, I'm trying to sell the MPC Studio on Craigslist

This item is greatness.....It goes with me almost everyday. Extremely powerful, versatile, gives me the ability to be creative, fast, light and compact, looks great and I can go on and on. I'm glad Akai has integrated software with there hardware. They have some impressive sounds and very user friendly software. If you are a producer, or just like creating music for you own enjoyment you can't go wrong with this. Enjoy!

I bought a Yamaha su 20 sampler in 1995 which had filter, pitch, 12 different pads like MPC but the overdub deal with MPC was not a option. Factory content got me going but for now I choose to be original and make my own samples. More fun and feeling of accomplishment. You need a $50 Behringer usb sampler when buying however which actually works. Click preferences when it comes up and click again ok and now your in business. Plug your speakers into the headphone jack in the usb mixer to get sound. Plug into the 2-Track RCA slot in the USB mixer with RCA to headphone 1/8 in. to source to sample from like a I-Phone, Android, or whatever. I also use Sony Sound Forge to make MP3 tracks but supposedly workstation MPC can do it but that is a mystery. In addition to that I have a small Gemini DJ pre-amp mixer (Again I plug into the headphone cue with Altec speakers (needs 1/4 in. adapter)) which will go for less than a $100. Get the short 3 feet cables for headphone (1/8 inch) to RCA from Radio Shack or elsewhere but make sure their the $10 sturdy ones (white and red), metal gold not necessary. I record onto a mini disc recorder with a plug in (1/8 inch) which can be bought through Amazon.com. I have two by Sony (MZ-N707)&(MZ-S1) which has a back orange light where the other has no light but more sound bars and more refined bass and treble settings. I record manual mode increasing optimum output with all sound bars full and right click send on MPC Track Mixer increasing the 4 volumes to 12. Don't forget to check the many sound effects on the program mixer which gives you 128 tracks recording mixing capability. After mini disc recording, I play it back into sound forge making a MP3 track. If you want to flex a mic, Behringer has a $50 phantom powered mic you can voice over the beat you just made (Behringer C-1) maybe not the best quality but works decent and can be purchased through Amazon.com. Don't forget to order a phantom mic cable as the mic does not come with one but does come with a cool plastic carrying case. Also the MPC I got came with the coolest red neoprene zipper carrying case as mentioned before as it is portable. This is NYC however and your pushing your luck bringing computers and MPC's outside. Police are on site at Apple stores in NYC because the I Phone is such a targeted item by thieves (BE WISE). Thank me later. Make sure you have Windows 7 and at least 2 Ghz on your lap top which I use or Mac. or OS. Be proud to have the name which many famous producers have become legends like Pete Rock, Premier, Lord Finesse, Kanye West, Quest Love (The Roots), plus who knows who else. No complaints whatsoever. I have no desire to look for anything else. Completely satisfied. Peace to everybody out there doing their thing trying to take sampled music production to the next level as we evolve. Note MPC did two updates since I bought the MPC STUDIO. All went well and if anything improved the product and at the same time made it more fun by making it more user friendly.
