I've had this soundcard (audio interface would be more accurate) for about 2 years, and since that time there have been alot of new USB and some firwire soundcards put on the market. Alot of the newer interfaces are also smaller by comparison but I still think that this as a serious recording interface can't be beat.I recommend the Saffire LE over the Saffire because the main difference is the Saffire (399) version has sound effects built into the soundcard, and the Saffire LE has the effects bundled as VST plug ins which can be used with any VST compatible program (requires registration though).
I have this soundcard and a Echo MiaMIDI Digital PCI Audio Interface (another workhouse, had over 5 years), and I use this for either laptop recording, or hook it up to my desktop when I want to record straight from an instrument. I've recorded digitally and analog from an MPC 1000 and 2000, and various midi keyboards, also used the mic inputs with a Shure microphone, great quality.
The reason for four stars instead of five? If you use this soundcard with a MINI-firewire plug, like the ones built into most Dell laptops, make sure you have the latest version of the firmware to make up for any latency (delay, audio dropout) coming from using a mini-firewire plug versus a regular Firewire 400 or 800 port. This shouldn't be a problem on Macs or most PCs desktops with FIREWIRE PORTS, but it was a small issue when I first started using it with a Dell laptop, after updating the software the latency issues were greatly improved (basically non-existant). And again this is a FIREWIRE ONLY audio interface, it WON'T WORK WITH USB! Hope this is informative, have fun!

It's always tough reviewing something after changing over to new software or hardware, or both. But this unit seems to work really well with Mac software, Logic, Garage Band, etc. Little setup time, lots of features. It comes bulked with a mind-blowing stack of demo CDs and software, all pretty much useless trials and CD's trying to get you to buy software, so if you have nothing to run it with you will need something for sure.Issues with the unit? The only thing is I have no idea how to turn it off, I emailed Focusrite' support and they said there was none. So when not in use you will need to unplug the firewire cable, and or the power cable, it's sort of a silly little flaw that can get annoying.

After coming off a highly dissapointed experience using the POD Tone Port 2, I decided to research the Saffire. The reviews spoke very well of this device. I have owned it now for one year (beats the 6 months lifespan of my Tone Port).About the Interface:
It is a very sturdy product. Its sound quality is crisp, clear far exceeded the previous 4 home recording interfaces I have owned thus far. The Saffire LE includes every type of connection I needed for an interface: XLRs for my mic, 1/4" for my stereo guitar, MIDI for my keyboard. I could not ask for more! Any other unit in this price line lacked at least one of these connections.
About the packaged software:
Contains a nice set of EQs, Comp, and Reverb. Each of them are editable to your taste. It also has built in mixer that manages the volumes from multiple sources going out. For example, if you like to practice to pre-recorded music you will have your instrument in one channel and a software like iTunes in another channel running at the same time. This interface screen enables you to blend the volume between the two sources from one screen without having to mess with each source on its own. It will allow you to set the volumes for each. Then, using the cross fader you can modulate between which output is to have the greater volume.
About the output:
One feature I discovered after purchase that I found to be very resourceful was the separate volume controls for both the speakers and headphones. This was a nice surprise. My home studio uses near field speakers facing my PC. Meanwhile, the other half of the room is where the instrumentalist records. Being the musician's hearing is skewed by facing the back of the speakers, the headphones serve them well to capture the upper frequencies while still feeling the lower frequencies eminating from the speakers.
This is one product that earned its five stars for thinking intuitively about the needs of a home recording studio owner especially in empowering me with the type of connections I require. Above all, the tone is excellent. I highly recommend this product. I only wish I had known about this before losing $130 to a far more inferior product, and product support, by comparison before making this purchase. My lesson to you is, spend a little more now. You will save in the long run!
If you have the new MacBook Pro with 800FW don't forget to order a 400 to 800 CABLE. LaCie 130849 FireWire 400 to FireWire 800 Flat Cable (Orange) You will need it. Also FYI many of the 400 to 800 adapters don't work properly. They also can flop out of the input at the worst possible time.
We also hooked our Yamaha Motif 8 to the Midi in/out. Works like a charm. The focusrite preamps are top of class. They sound nearly as clean as the pres on my MOTU 896mk3. MOTU 896mk3 Firewire Audio Interface
