I didn't think much of these either when I first hooked them up to my Xfi iPod dock and external sound card, because it's a compressed source like a laptop headphone/line out, without adequate digital-to-analog conversion (DAC). I have since hooked these babies up with the balanced (NOT mini-plug or RCA) inputs, which is a fantastic feature to have for the price, to a high-quality DAC with balanced outputs using balanced cables.I also re-located them to be used on a desktop when my pos 2.1 computer speakers failed miserably, and prematurely. Oh well, I thought they sounded good for a year or so (RIP). That alone made quite a difference; before I had them on end tables where they really got lost in the shuffle because that is not their strength at all.
It is useful to know that these are not meant to be room-filling speakers; they are pro-audio quality near field monitors, meaning they sound best when triangulated with a single listener from a properly sourced and hooked up desktop/mixing-console orientation.
WOW!, what a difference is all I can say. With a good, preferably uncompressed source like a CD or lossless audio file, and a high-quality DAC, and with balanced cables, these things really rock. The high/low/none frequency selector switch is subtle but useful for tailoring the sound as well: low is good for use without a subwoofer, and high for with one, and the middle ground is useful for critical near-field reference listening.
These are not computer gaming speakers, and they do not provide simulated surround sound. They provide powerful, transparent sound when used properly. If you want to hear bit-perfect stereo reproduction, these are a great ticket provided the rest of your components are up to snuff. They will reveal the truth about your audio system, for better or worse.
Four-star reference-quality sound from active pro-audio NFM's for $200; five-star deal for sure.

Listen to the Control 2P detail preferably in a store that has been ringing constantly, and see if you so excited as me.

I have used these series of JBL Studio monitors for computer speakers for many years, and they are excellent, especial when paired with sub. I particularly like the an eXo2. Careful, not any sub will work. Must have line outs to the JBLs, or get an extra JBL extension speaker like I have done that has the 8 ohm connectors on the satellites. I have a 6 year old MacBook and run these as desktop speaker and they ad tons of volume even coming straight out of the head phone jack. My wife has a MacBook Pro, which is much newer and they ad the same volume. Also these speakers are not bass heavy at all... I mean at all. They are flat. What I mean is they bring all ranges of sound to the front because they are monitors. No sound range, be it bass, mid or highs, are featured more prominently than the other ranges. The reason for this is they are, again, monitors. They are meant for recording or listening to music where you want to hear how it was recorded originally. They are not like home stereo speakers, although they sound really good. They image extremely well and work great with my Digital Audio Workstation.Couple problems with the speakers. First, they don't produce a high quality sound. The high's are ok, but the reproduction and clarity of vocal and lows is not very good.Second, the covers of these speakers bend easily. I broke one while unpacking.
Remember, you get what you pay for!
