If you want a recorder as a scratch pad for ideas or to practice multiple parts and you don't want to pay a lot, this is the product for you. Spend the extra money though, and get the startup pack w/ the tape, headphones, microphone, etc. For $39 bucks more, it's really a deal.Buy TASCAM MF-P01 4 Track Cassette Recorder Now
I am glad I got this. I ve been thru many... (Tascam 244 80's, Tascam 688, DA 38 etc). You know, sometimes the purest easiest lightest quickest piece of equipment is the best one for writing and/or practicing. Quick right? Before the idea goes away! Great for on the go, at a friends house, outside, even fits in my piano bench!!!. Dont expect fancy stuff, the signal you feed is what you get but I love that for this purpose. Highly recommended for young and old. The basics, but GREAT!Read Best Reviews of TASCAM MF-P01 4 Track Cassette Recorder Here
I purchased this Tascam recorder to listen to some 4 track tapes that I made over 10 years ago and it meets my needs perfectly for that. The MF-P01 is a simple 1 input recorder, which I think would be great for capturing a quick run through of a song, and then building on that one track at a time. The recorder's controls are laid out in a simple and easy to understand manner, so it's easy to jump right in and start recording. On the right side you have the tape mechanism, with a flip open lid, and the familiar tape controls: play, record, etc. There's also an analog counter, with a reset button, to keep track of tape positions.
On the left you have the levels and adjustment controls. The individual volume wheels for each track have notches indicating the 0 level and are painted diagonally with two different colors that allows the user to quickly glance at the dials to see the volume level. The pan and master volume are controlled by twist knobs, that are totally self-explanatory. A vertical slider controls the level of your input device which is indicated by the LED levels indicators. Finally, a set of push buttons are used to select the track that will be recorded, that track is indicated by a blinking LED light just above the push button.
On the back of the machine you have the on and off switch, a headphone jack, and left and right aux/line out.
I gave the MF-P01 four stars because this unit only has one input for recording. This isn't that big of a deal for me, since I'm not recording. However, if you want to record multiple instruments simultaneously (drum machine and an electric guitar or vocals and guitar at the same time, for example), you might want to check out the Tascam Porta 02 -this is the model I used to own, which allows 2 inputs at once.
Other than that tiny flaw, I think this is an awesome deal for an entry level single input recorder. This would be great gift for musically inclined kids and aspiring musicians and songwriters.I got this about 2 weeks ago, and am very happy with it. It's in no way a high grade recoreder, but is awesome for overdubbing rhythm and lead parts, or doing harmonies. I actually got a pretty good take on "Homebound" by Ted Nugent (sweet song) and some basic overdubbing. If you're like me and need a way to track some ideas and some demo's out there this thing is great. This is a fun toy to record your garage band. Brings back memories of the symphony of young, aggressive music.
