I am the owner of a DD55, this unit's predecessor. I was fairly happy with the DD55 but was intrigued by the additional pad and hoped the the new generation would have better pads since the DD55 suffers from poor response at times. So I pre-oredered the DD65 which arrived two weeks ago.

Out of the box, I was fairly impressed. The bells and whistles are a nice touch. The new layout is more ergonomic but can't say is worth the upgrade. The auxillary is fun. The onboard sound module sounds slightly better though the kcik pedal sounds exactly the same.

The bad part:

Now, my primary use for my DD55 is for midi triggeringwhich was also my intended use for the DD65. I got everything set up in my DAW only to discover that the open and closed hi-hat sends the same MIDI note! I.e. when I strike the hi-hat pad with the pedal depressed, it sends the same note as striking it without the pedal depressed. I called Yamaha who confirmed this "bug." This wasn't the case with the DD55why would that change? They supposedly opened a ticket with Yamaha Japan but had no reassuring words about fixing the problem.

I love the sounds on the DD-65. Mine came with a power supply so didn't need the accessory bundle. Tracked down and bought the hi hat and kick pedals (hh 65 and kp 65) online and it's a lot better to play. I saw a Yamaha report that they have fixed the hi hat MIDI problem but haven't used MIDI yet.
