The short and sweet of it is that I have owned Shure E2C's, Bose TriPort, Bose QC2's, and Shure E4C's. The newer SE420's give you deep, rich sound without overwhelming base or blocking out the highs. Search around for an authorized dealer to get the best rate and you can snag an authentic pair for about $250...much lower than the $400 retail on Shure's site. The combination of the two separate TrueAcoustic speakers for distinction and clarity are unparalleled. Needless to say, all of my other aforementioned ear and headphones are all now on eBay!JE

I gave up on the Bose Quiet Comfort 2 after having 3 pairs break. I had read several positive professional and user reviews regarding Shure earphones and decided to give the SE420 a try. I have used them for about 3 months now in the office and on airplanes, including long-haul flights. The noise blocking is excellent my co-workers and flight attendant have been super-annoyed because they have difficulty getting my attention when I wear them the noise isolation is that good. I thought the Shure earphone noise isolation worked better than the Bose QC2 noise-canceling. The sound quality seems better, too, but I'm not enough of an audiophile to comment on the nuances. The Shure SE420's performance and comfort is dependent on selecting an ear sleeve with good fit and comfort and properly adjusting the position in the ear -else, the sound quality is rather mediocre. But fitted and adjusted properly, the performance is amazing.
The earphone case is much more compact than the Bose QC2 and I do not have to carry spare batteries with me. Another advantage of the SE420 over the QC2.
The reasons I am not giving the SE420 5 stars are: 1). The extra time it takes to get just the right adjustment for optimal performance and 2). The price is rather high. But, given the opportunity to do it all over again, I would have skipped the Bose QC2 and have gone only with the Shure SE420.

When I first put in these headphones I was very pleased; the sound quality is noticeably better than my 120s. However, for the price difference, I don't know that I would choose this set. That being said, I don't know which other brand I would try, but I am hesitant to recommend these to people, especially those who don't truly understand how to wear these or evaluate the quality of headphones. One concern that I have is that they will not last. My first pair of Shures was a 320 (I believe) which lasted a year, then the 120s which lasted a year, and then these. I fear that these will only have a one-year life span as well. I listen to music with them about 3 hours a day though, so the use is very heavy. I maintain them well (keep them stored in the case when not in use) but eventually one ear shorted out on my last two pairs. Here's to hoping that won't happen to this pair, but that is my only concern. Another note is that these are the most comfortable Shures I've owned.

We bought these a few months back, though I decided to write a review now. Ill start by saying, to the bad reviews about it not fitting correctly, some people just don't like this style of earbuds, and its perfectly alright to send them back. For those that like in-ear earbuds, these are absolutely the best as far as fit and noise isolation. It is like someone took the world's volume from 100% down to around 20%, its great for being able to hear music in a loud enviornment. Although, that is the greatest drawback as well, you shouldn't use them when hearing your surroundings is vital.
About the sound, amazing for a pair of earbuds. It's like stepping into a concert when you put them in, minus the crowd and sensations of bass notes coming through the ground. The highs and mids are clear and the bass is smooth and tight, not muddy like most earbuds. Although the bass could be more, it is still amazing. Don't buy these expecting thumping and loud bass, because that isnt what they deliver. They deliver the clear and undistorted bass that makes sound truely good.
Overall, amazing earbuds, the only set thats better is Shure's SE530, the next level up, which i beleive is truely the best pair on the consumer market, although i decided to go with these and save a few bucks. Either way you go, these SE420's, or SE530's, know that you are getting an excelent pair of earbuds. These Shure earphones have two drivers in them. They sound very good. They are full and rich everywhere, but just a little lighter in the bass department. For more bass, get the Shure 530 which has three drivers: one treble and two bass drivers. I also have other earphones like the Klipsch Image and others that have one driver in them. I also really enjoy the lighter sound too. Ocassionally, the Ultimate Ear and Shure ear canal phone can be fatiguing because the sound is so lush.
I really enjoy wearing them. I like the fact that they come with a number of earpieces to fit most ear sizes. They also come with a short wire with and extension. If you have an Ipod in a shirt pocket, you would not need the extender. I also like the carrying case for the earphones.
The fit is over the back of the ear and they fit very well. These earphones are extremely comfortable. The reviewer that said they are not as rich sounding as the Ultimate Ear Tri-10 is correct. The Tri-10 has three drivers like the Shure 530.
If a person feels that they really need the richer sound, then get the Shure 530. The price on Amazon--especially the Marketplace is very competative. It is really not much more to get the 530. I love my Ultimate Ear Tri-10, but that earphone simply is not as comfortable to wear as either Shure earphone. The 420, 530, and the Tri-10 all appear to be very well made with heavy duty cables. To date, I have not had a problem with any of them.
