after lots of research and playing through many practice amps my wife an i decided this was the best amp for the $.

here is why:

-size. it had to be small, and be easy to carry, my wife is very small so lugging around a huge cabinet was out of the question also we live in an apartment complex, loud is not necessary.

-options. this amp had to be as close to a professional unit as possible, so she could get used to how a real amp would work. 3 band eq and 4th band eq boost, with a limiter and the input is passive/active sensing so you don't have to remember which input to use with the bass your using. also you can unplug the speaker in the cabinet and use an external speaker of your choice, in this price range this amp is the ONLY one with this feature, also direct balanced out and effects loop basically make this thing like a mini pro head!

-price. yes there are cheaper units. but honestly, go play through them and you will quickly hear a huge difference in sound quality and feel lower build quality, this thing looks and sounds very professional. the closest thing in price/size/quality is the Ampeg 8' and it just did not compare, the extra $50 is well worth it.

-sound. one of the most important, this amp has an amazing tone. you will quickly notice the shortcomings of a cheap bass, we have a Dean 4 string active bass and a passive ibenez 4 string with old strings and the difference is huge. through other amps we could barely tell any difference. you can really shape the sound of your bass with this amp, also the built in limiter makes it so you cannot brake it, no mater how hard you play and how loud.

note* this amp is deceiving. i think Hartke has there own alternate universe measuring scale when it comes to output wattage because this has 3 time the volume of other practice amps in this price range, i have not tried yet but i seriously think this amp will drive 2 10" speakers quite well, to those that think this amp will not work in a jam session setting with other musicians i say get the A35, and run the internal speaker and another external 12" speaker in parallel and you will be fine.

to sum things up, after all the amps we played through and all the research we did, this amp is the ONLY practice amp i would ever suggest. also Hartke backs there equipment with a awesome warranty. with this amp there is room to grow and it will get you familiar with professional grade equipment while you're learning the instrument.
