I use the Roland Duo Capture EX to interface guitar, bass, and midi keyboards with an iPad. I will also use this as a portable interface for my Sonar studio replacing my existing Tascam interface.
Pros:
Small size portability
Works with Mac, PC, iOS
Bus powered with a computer, optional battery or DC power supply with iPad
Ultra Clean pre-amps.
Pro Level Outputs
Sturdy Construction
Hi-Z/Lo-Z combo inputs for both 1/4" phone plugs and XLR
Cons:
Requires Camera Connection Kit (other interfaces on the market have a direct to iPad connection)
No means of charging iPad while using the Duo Capture (because of the CCK)
Does not automatically switch to battery power if DC supply is disconnected.
I have over 20 years experience as a musician, and for the last year and a half, I've been using an iPad for guitar tone and for synth engines in a live environment.
Since using the iPad, I've gone from IK Multimedia's iRig, to Positive Grid's JamPlug, to Grffin's StudioConnect, to the Roland Duo Capture EX. Here's what I've noticed about each:
iRig feels cheap and introduces a lot of unwanted noise.
JamPlug, less noise, not as cheap feeling, but still plugs in through the combo mic/headphone input — not as clean as a 30pin or lighning connection
The StudioConnect delivered much better results, cleaner sound, allowed for midi in and out, has a volume control independent of the output level and charges the ipad while in use. Although better than the other two devices, the StudioConnect seemed to compress the low tones of the guitar considerably. Another advantage was the midi in and out. I can control program changes with a foot controller as well as run synth apps with a midi keyboard.
Roland Duo Capture EX: Hands down the best interface I've used for iOS. I'm also looking forward to using this in my studio. The built in pres are ultra clean. There's no distortion, compression, or clipping at all. I can record mics, or Hi-Z signals (guitar and bass). The Duo Capture also has midi in and out for foot controllers and keyboards.
If you're looking for a serious interface for Mac, PC, and iOS, I highly recommend this product.
