I use this as a pre-amp to plug my guitar into garage band on my mac. I tend to keep the settings pretty neutral and use the effects in garage band. I like the price and the fact that I can use to jam through a PA if so desired. I think the effects will be more useful in that setting. I recommend getting the power adapter too, it drains batteries when not in use for long periods, so if you are an intermittent player like myself you end up having to take the battery out after each time you use it, which is a real pain.

When i bought it, i needed a preamp but it is more than a preamp, it is a very complete box. You can use like a guitar modeler with several sound options when changing the positions of the switches in the front panel (drive, treble, bass and level controls and amp, mod and mic switches, i dont use the ground switch) and create several sounds like Jazz, distortion, clean, rock, metal, blues. You can activate the effects with the foot switch that is the weak element of the box, it feels fragile. If you use the box like a recording box, connect it with a XLR female cable to a mixing console or a computer. When you need a preamp or effects pedal it is a suitable selection. I think that it is best for recording rather than a gig because of the foot switch.

Received the pedal two days ago.
The good:
The pedal comes with several recommended settings in the manual. All of the distortions are good. Powerful and sensitive. Much easier to carry around than my dated GT6. And it's so cheap.
The bad:
the clean tweed sound is a nightmare to me. especially when plugged into mixer + headphones. It sounds either unbearably flat(at higher gain) or dry(at lower gain). People may still like the sound but I don't.
No sweetness and no warmth. I guess that's what you get with a non-tube analog pedal.

Very nice pedal. Its a copy of GT2. And the clean sound, its the best. He cames with a Treeble and Bass equalizer; simulates three tipes of amps; three amp mode; 3 micro mode; soo for this price, you need do take this pedal do your set.
I have a Behringer TM300, and the GDI21 sounds exactly like it. I use the Tweed amp setting, clean, with mic set to Classic, and with the other controls( drive, treble, bass, and level) set the same as on the TM300, the two are almost indistinguishable with only the slight difference that the GDI21 has a cleaner sound. I have yet to try recording directly into my digital recorder with it, but as I read in another very helpful review, this stomp box should be cleaner( less background hiss) than the TM300.
One noticeable difference is the battery compartment on the GDI21 is MUCH easier to access than on the TM300, where you have to remove the pedal from those spring-loaded pins. The other notable advantage of the GDI21 is that it acts like a signal splitter, so that the same input signal goes via a 1/4" phone jack to my amp, and there is another balanced XLR connector available that sends the input signal to the PA.
Now I have 2 of the same thing pretty much, I like redundancy at a gig so that I always have a backup. I like this box so much, I'm not going to bother with the Sansamp GT2.
