These headphones are awesome. You can hear the whole range of sound, Highs, Mids, Lows, its all there. Speaking of lows if you love bass these are the headphones for you (The bass is really heavy). The only problem I have with them is they start to hurt your head after a couple hours of being on your head. Its not that big of a deal because if you take them off for like a minute your fine. All in all these are some nice headphones so if you like heavy bass I would look into getting a pair.

It is a little heavy for longer than 1 hour use. But the sound is excellent.

However, the seller is deceptive. This product is sold with a storage box. They did not send the storage box to me. They just offered a free return postage.

I got these earphones very recently. I'm planning an airplane trip soon and want to block out the airplane noise. For now, I've used working around the house doing chores. They blocked out vacuum noise very well, and reduced crowd noise in a restaurant as well. They don't block out much noise with the noise cancelling off, even though they are in ear models. I have a very inexpensive set of earphones that do a better job of blocking out ambient noise better than the Audio Technicas do. However with the noise cancellation on, the ATs block out far more.

My biggest complaint is these plugs are very uncomfortable on my right ear. I'm sure it has more to do with my ear than the earphones, but they're uncomfortable nonetheless. I wore them for about two hours and didn't notice the pain until I took them out. OUCH! My right ear was KILLING me. I didn't pay attention to the alignment of the plugs in my ears, so it could also have also been how I put them in. I will be more careful in the future to make sure it isn't operator error. I can't imagine why only one ear hurt. ? At full retail, the pain would be unacceptable. At less than $65, it is bearable. = /

Lastly, with the inexpensive ear phones I mentioned before, I can listen to my mp3 player at very low volumes, about 10% 20 of the max. They block out that much ambient noise. With the Audio Technica ear phones, I have the volume set right in the middle of the volume level. I would have hoped I could listen at lower levels than that. But the sound quality is much better than any other ear phones I have owned before.

All in all, these are a good buy. They cancel out noise and have good quality sound.

*****4/28/2009****UPDATE

I use these phones maybe two hours every week or so and I'm still using the original battery. I left them on for over 24 hours by accident. They were in a fairly quiet room with my MP3 player off, and the battery is still holding on. I'm pleasantly surprised by that fact.

*****5/9/2009 UPDATE*****

As I suspected...operator error. I was thinking of giving these awaythey were hurting my right ear so much. They also caused a lot of static I didn't get with my Jbuds. But then I thought maybe the static I was hearing and the discomfort were caused by the same thing. This morning I replaced the silicone plugs with the LARGEST ones, and VOILA!! They blocked more ambient noise, I'm using at a lower volume and the pain went away. Apparantly they were jamming against my ear cartilage to create a seal, vs letting the silicone do the job. Mystery solved! Really good ear buds.

I've owned these ANC3s for a while but recently read about the improvements baked into the new Bose QuietComfort® 15 and decided to take the plunge and see if they really are worth the money. I fly 35 weeks/year so blocking out the sonic horrors of modern-day air travel is my primary goal for these headphones. I have purchased a number of headphones over the years trying to find the right price/performance balance but had not yet taken the plunge on anything from Bose. I had an opportunity to spend an hour on my flight home yesterday comparing the QC15s to my two current favorites, these ANC3s and the Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7, and I was surprised to see that the Bose came away in a distant second place. Understand that I am not an audiophile so I am judging purely based on sound isolation. To my ears, the sound quality of all three is so far ahead of cheapo, disposable headphones that any further differences between the three are impossible to distinguish.

The ATH-ANC7 are over-the-ear like the Bose and in many respects are pretty similar. The Bose are more comfortable in terms of materials and seem to have a higher quality overall. The Bose also have significantly better noise reduction qualities. If I wanted to stick with over-the-ear and was deciding on spending the extra cost to bump up to the Bose then I definitely would.

The ATH-ANC3 are in-ear of course so it is a little bit of apples-and-oranges comparison with the Bose. They aren't the "jam into your ear canal" design like something from Shure, but they are meant to fit snugly inside. In comparing the sound isolation between the ANC3 and the Bose it was close but the ANC3 definitely had a slight edge to my ears. I like the quality of the active noise-canceling from the ANC3 better than the Bose (turning each on and off while leaving the headphones on) and then the in-ear isolation of the ANC3 provides a little extra bonus. Add to this advantage the fact that the ANC3 are far, far smaller (a great little case that also fits my iPod) and have a monitor button that let's you hear what is happening around you without removing the earphones, and the gap between the two widens. Finally, consider that you can buy 5 pairs of the ANC3 for the same cost of the Bose and there is absolutely no contest.

I think I am going to try something from Shure or Etymotic to see if the true in-the-ear-canal design can provide better sound isolation, but if I decide to stick with an active noise cancelling system it will most definitely be the ANC3.

UPDATE So I purchased the Etymotic Research HF5 and was absolutely blown away by what a great job they did with sound isolation. I was able to listen to music at literally 1/2 the volume and still get far more sound isolation than provided by any of the options mentioned above. At one point on my flight this morning I realized that I wasn't hearing the plane but rather was feeling the vibrations coming up through my feet as soon as I lifted my legs off the floor the "sound" went away. I had really disliked the feel of a pair of Shure that I had bought years back, but the HF5s with their flange tips felt great. I was wearing the earphones comfortably for 7 hours and from airport to plane to airport to train to NYC streets I was traveling in blissful solitude. **Highly** recommended!

We bought these for a recent trip to Europe and they did a fine job of reducing the airplane noise to a much lower level. They even reduced some overly loud conversations when we were trying to get some sleep on the plane. With the adapter for plugging into the airplane audio jacks, I was amazed to be able to clearly hear the audio on the movies for the 1st time in many years. I kept them on for the entire 9 hour flight from Europe to Atlanta, even when not listening to audio. They may not be the best device of their kind but for the money we were very glad we bought them. Definitely recommend them.

What I think some of the less satisfied reviewers here may be missing is a proper seal in the ear canal. These phones are NOT earbuds. The key is for them fit like earPLUGS. The earmold should go in more deeply than you think. If properly fitted they'll provide ample bass (but see below) and good noise reduction, and they won't slip or fall out. However, Audio-Technica's instruction booklet tells you essentially nothing about how to fit them.

First, make sure you're using the correct unit for each ear. The letters L and R are printed on the ear side of the phones, but they're almost impossible to read. Hold one of the phones in front of you, the silicone earmold pointing to the left (as if you were about to put it in your right ear). The earmold should be pointing upward at about a 45 degree angle. The wire exiting from the phone should be running away from you. No? Grab the other phone.

With your left hand, pull up gently on the top of your right ear. With your right hand, push the earmold *upward* into your ear canal with a slight twisting and rocking motion. Repeat with the left ear, of course.

Much of the ambient noise should be gone, before you even switch on the dongle. If you still hear lots of noise, or if the phones fall out just by the weight of the cord, you haven't inserted them right. If necessary, try different earmold sizes. In many cases you may need a SMALLER earmold, not a larger one, so the earmold goes deeply enough into the ear canal. Also try adding a drop of K-Y Jelly or similar skin-safe lubricant to the silicone earmold. You snicker! I'm not joking. It works.

The cord shouldn't hang down from your ears. The wires should exit forward and slightly upward. Loop the wires over the top of your ears and bring the wires together behind your head, not under your chin. The sliding bit of plastic on the phone wires snugs up the wires, to keep them in place over your ears. Bring the cord forward over one shoulder, and clip the dongle to your collar or pocket. This will eliminate the thudding noise that dangling wires transmit to your ears when they hit something.

How do these phones work? I'm not sure the ANC reduces noise by 20dB I'd estimate it at something closer to 12dB but it's still quite a substantial difference. The pure isolation phones (without ANC) such as the Shures and Etymotics are great if you want to shut out the world entirely. The ATH-ANC3s don't isolate quite as completely, so conversation is still possible (if a bit awkward). Just hit the mute button.

Sound quality: Warm and fat, with a sizable mid-bass peak. The high end is a bit pinched and not too clean. Instruments lack a sense of air around them. Stereo imaging isn't what it could be. There is some audible hiss when the ANC is on, but it's minimal, and far less objectionable than the background noise it's eliminating.

I'd characterize the ATH-ANC3's as a rockor pop-oriented sound. Classical music lovers might want to consider the Shure or Etymotic isolators but remember, they cost 3-4 times as much. For many folks, these phones will sound just fine and will almost certainly trounce the $1.50 cheapies that came with their mp3 players.

Build quality: I don't see too much to gripe about. The dongle feels reasonably sturdy, though the clip looks flimsy. These phones are made in China, unlike earlier (and more expensive) Audio Technica products that were made in Japan. Be aware that they may not have passed through the kind of quality control that the name would suggest. But also remember what you're paying for them.

Bottom line is that these phones provide significant relief from noise while still allowing conversation. The sound is acceptable if not stellar. I don't think I'd pay A-T's MSRP for them, but at anything under seventy bucks or so, they're a more than respectable value, especially if most of your listening is rock, jazz, or pop music.

I purchased these noise suppression earbuds for 2 purposes; flights and riding my motorcycle. I am very pleased to say they work fabulous for both. Not only do a great job of eliminating background noise but they sound great! I have the Bose earbuds but I think these actually produce a nicer sound; I immediately heard nice crisp highs that I didn't with my Bose.

The only negative thing is that the right bud seems to slide out of my ear canal so I have to keep pushing it back in. I don't seem to have the problem with the left.

They aren't as comfortable as the Bose but the Bose have no noise suppression or isolation at all.

Definitely a great buy at $55US.

I am surprised there aren't more reviews of this headset. I am using a Cowon J3 and Clip+ and went through several $ 50 and under headsets. I always felt I was missing something, I have a great player which allows me to fine tune the sounds in 21 separate areas. I needed headset to match! I have now jumped to the UM3x and wow what a difference a good pair of sets have done. For example it reminds me of my first day out of boot camp at San Diego. After three months of D.Is thrashing you and seeing green and olive drab my eyes buldged at the sparkling reds, yellows and blues female were wearing. I read various posts for weeks and settled in on the Senn IE 8 or the UM3x. The UM3x lives up to and surpasses what I expected. The Lows are very punchy like your head is in front of the bass drum but at the same time you hear clarity that is unexplainable. Its like can hear the singers heart beat (I think), The Highs are so crisp its hard to explain like fresh lettuce compared to spinich. The Mids are clear and right there in your face but you don't lose the concert hall spaciousness. Bottom line in a simple phrase is "Cristal clear and clean you will hear instrument which you never knew were there".

The over the ear twisted wire is very impressive and strong. You don't hear the muffle sound even if you variously wiggle the wires. You wear these over the ear and then Cinch them securely to the back of your head took me awhile to figure this out. Its amazingly secure they are in your ear it will never give you the "pop out" effect that ear dangling IEMs do. The ear portions of the UM3x are not fancy and glossy and tend to disappear in your ear without the irritation you may expect. I am very happy I took the chance on these head sets. I will update this post if my feeling change.

Latest Update**********

I had worries about removable wires popping off or with time shorting out. Not the case. The Westone folks build the UM3x the USA way, built to last.! Love em.

Another Update *********

Still enjoying these ear buds. I have over 100 hours on them. Feel asleep with them on a few times. I've read review about the Mids being weak. I don't get it if clarity is weak then these Westons are the weakest phone I've ever heard! I have found myself enjoying music I had long ago set aside.

These sets kinda twist into your ear and then loop over the back the cables have toughness and are tightly twisted together. As the cable loops over your ear they is a rubber cinch thing which I thought was to keep the cable straight. Well it has become an excellent way to snug the headset to your head as the cable runs down your back providing great confort. Not looking back.

Being a very picky listener and musician, I'm on a constant search for the best in ear monitors. I've used Ultimate Ears for years. I got sick of replacing my UE10 cables every 2-3 months and they finally got stolen which forced a decision upgrade to custom UE's or pursue some other alternative. I decided to try Um3x's with custom made inserts. Simply awesome and at half the price of UE's custom set up. It's still a $500 plus rig, but well worth it if you are picky and want to hear all the musical details (rich low end bass tones and highly articulated mids and highs) whether on on your iPod/MP3, on stage or in the studio. I decided on the 3's rather than the 4's because the removable cables are important to me. When they do the 4's in a removable cable version, that's my next stop!

I have owned these for about six months now and have been pleased with the sound quality, design etc. Recently, however they have proven defective and I was surprised to learn that the manufacturer does not warranty this product when not sold by an "authorized" reseller for which Amazon sellers are not. As a result I am out a pair of very expensive IEMs.

Forewarned is forearmed.

Originally written April 2012:

You might say I've been on a quest of sorts. I've tried many mid and top tier universals, searching for something I can be content with for the long haul; something I can use on my daily commute that's not only satisfying aurally but also in build and fit, with a pleasing aesthetic.

Sound wise, I thought I might have found it in the Hifiman RE262 but ultimately is was too light in bass for my tastes and the new modular cable was too heavy and flopped around, constantly reminding me of its presence. From that experience I knew I had to find something with really spectacular mids and better bass weight and impact. Having an admitted bias for dynamic drivers, little did I know I'd find it in a balanced armature design!

When it comes to pliable, easy to deal with cables and sleek, form fitting housings, no one really holds a candle to Westone. I've owned both the 3 and 4 in the past and absolutely loved the build, fit and aesthetic but always found something to complain about in the sound. Having read that several head-fiers, while ultimately preferring the 4 to the UM3X, thought the UM3X had the better mids with more bass quantity, I knew it was something I should give a try. I had thought the 4's mids were pretty darn good intimate, warm and involving, so if the UM3X could do it better, it sounded like a good candidate on my quest.

I decided to buy from Earphone Solutions, for their reputation as an outstanding authorized Westone dealer and the 2 year manufacturer warranty. I also opted to buy the removable cable RC version. Right from the beginning I got a great fit, with great sound using the standard Westone gray flex sleeves but just to be sure, I tried all of the supplied tips, plus several others from my box-o-tips. Yep, those gray tips are perfect.

My initial impressions, for the most part, still hold true now after having spent many more hours and commutes with them. Here are some of my initial impressions I shared with a couple of friends and fellow head-fiers:

The overall presentation is pretty natural sounding, perhaps even more so than the W4. I think it is as technically proficient and just as accurate as the W4, however the UM3x can appear a little sterile, whereas the W4 was maybe more musical.

I like the W4 treble a better. It's smoother and more detailed. The W4 is warmer and nearly as intimate in mids but the UM3X is clearer and more detailed throughout the midrange. The UM3X wins in bass hands down. It's the most satisfying bass I've ever heard to date in a BA. If the W4 had this bass, it would have been a masterpiece for me.

The UM3X separation and layering is unique and a step better than the W4 but the W4 has a wider soundstage. I'd also probably give the W4 the edge in instrument realism due to its treble. Fit is significantly better than the W4 and less tip dependent. I put on the med gray flex tips and I'm done.

As I said, those were my initial impressions and they're still pretty accurate to how I hear the UM3X. Here are some additional thoughts after using them for significantly more time:

Great forward guitars; nice thickness and decent bite.

Bass guitar is prominent, textured, musical and the thumping backbone to the music.

Drums sound excellent: nice tight toms; snares really pop; shimmering and sparkly rides, hi-hats and cymbals without any piercing or fatiguing aspects.

Very intimate soundstage with really good depth. I haven't heard this much depth in universal BA's before.

Unlike the SM3, there is space between backing and lead vocals, instead of being placed on top of each other.

Instrument realism and dynamics improve with a cleaner, more powerful amp.

Incredible instrument separation; each instrument is on its own layer and seems to rise up and out of the music if you focus on one in particular.

Vocals have a very analogue/vinyl feel and presentation to them. Always up front and center.

With the right recordings, vocals are incredibly intimate; as if the performance was being made exclusively for you.

So is this the end of the quest? Well it's the end of this particular quest. I've finally found a universal that I thoroughly enjoy from top to bottom, use daily and entertain zero thoughts of selling. However there is always room for a new quest: Vsonic GR08? Cardas Mirror? AKG K3003? FitEar To Go?

I love this hobby!

As a professional musician in this day and age, I pretty much only use in-ear monitoring and have tried a number of options... Shure etc. The Westones, due to the drivers, kicked the pricey Shure's bum, but sadly/unfortunately they still had the same problem I had with my $250+ Shures... ear sweat inevitably causes them to fail, thus rendering them useless for me. And to be honest, this would also render them useless at the gym... if you're actually WORKING out. Ha ha. So yes, great sound... NOT a good live monitoring solution... for a DRUMMER anyway. We're the only ones that get a real workout on stage anyway! Ha ha.

While I have only had the product a few hours, it has worked great for me on Windows 7 x64 Professional. Recording and playback through the included ProTools SE works as advertised.

*I was a little leery of the plastic construction at first, but it is very sturdy for what it is.

I needed something to use with my older [2007] Mac Pro tower so I could input audio from other sources such as "shortwave radios" and Microphones. This unit works just fine.

Just plug it in to your Mac with the usb cable, no need to install the drivers and it works with my existing audio programs. The preamp knobs allow precise level adjustment. There are little lights for each channel to let you know when the levels are too high as well. I'm very happy!

I've been using the previous version of the MobilePre with both Garageband and Logic Express and have had great results. There are, obviously, higher-end mic preamps out there, but this product has actually exceeded my expectations based on the price I paid. It's not jam-packed with features, but if you're just making simple demos with your voice, guitar, keys, etc. you really don't need that much. I haven't had any issues whatsoever with it. As long as you are careful to get the input level right (as loud as possible, but without clipping the signal) you really can't go wrong.

Ordered this as recently as 9/14/2011 and did not get headphones. I was looking for a pair that I received with an electronic drum kit a while back, they had great sound! This was the model number I came up with after some research. The iHP03.

Unfortunately, after waiting anxiously I received what you see in the image above; though, the entire page for this item reflects that it is headphones, including only other review here.

Just a heads up for those of you looking to get a good quality sounding pair of headphones for the right price, look elsewhere and save yourself some stress.

I purchased this last christmas for my girls, 9 and 6. They absolutely LOVE it. It makes them feel like real performers. If you download the karaoke songs from iTunes, while in iTunes, right-click on the song and go to the "Lyrics" tab. I then go to the internet and look up the songs lyrics. I copy and paste the words under the "Lyrics" tab in iTunes. When you connect the ipod to the microphone stand, when you select the karaoke song, the lyrics show up on the screen! I would definitely recommend this product!

This is great fun for the kids. It was easy to set up. There's room for two microphones (it comes with one, but you may buy another), and you can add an electric guitar.

I have a Sansa mp3 player, which connected easily and works well, though it doesn't seat in the mp3 holder well. That might hold an IPOD, but I don't know. It sits, but it's not well-seated and can fall out easily.

The mic volume can be controlled up or down and there are independent switches for each mic, but if the volume of the music is turned down, the mic is also turned down. There is no way to turn the mic volume so it is louder than the music. It is possible to turn the music completely off and sing to nothing.

There is an echo option which can be controlled to allow for more or less echo in the voice.

The vocal eliminator function will eliminate vocals from a track at the touch of a button. The vocals are not completely eliminated and the music is a little distorted, but that is to be expected when eliminating vocals from a track. It is not possible to do without a little distortion. It's a nice feature to have so we don't have to go out and buy a bunch of karaoke music.

The biggest drawback to this karaoke system over others is that it lacks the lyrics display. Of course, when using our regular mp3's, we don't have lyrics anyway; but there is no option of getting lyrics display if we wanted it. I simply go find the lyrics on the internet and print them out.

The kids enjoy this microphone. Sometimes, they don't necessarily use it for singing, but it's a fun system and we will get lots of enjoyment out of it as we have already.

I have wanted a karaoke machine for years but hated having to buy so many cd's for the music. Well not anymore, I can use my own music. I loved this machine and so did my 3 kids. I have used it almost every day since I got it.

I do have 3 problems with the SingStand but for me personally it didn't take away enough to give it less than 5 stars. 1) The space for the ipod is not big enough. 2) When I first plugged it in it didn't work. I had to remove and insert the plug several times and then it worked fine. 3) The "vocal" button to remove the original vocals makes it sound kind of garbled. Again, for me these are not big issues but they might be to someone.

I would highly recommend this product.

Like karaoke, but better, as long as you know the words. MP3 plugs in, you have the option of blocking out the words from the song to sing by yourself, or you can sing along with the artist. My 8 year old daughter got this for Christmas, and it is by far the favorite gift.

These ear phones are the 'knockin'est earbuds I've bought so far for $5. And I bought some whack Auvio ones from radioshack for 11.00 that didn't have bump like this. I was blown away by these. I walk 8 miles every day and the cord always gets bent next to the earbud and one ear goes out after 2-3wks. I will update and let you know how long they last.

**Update** I dropped them and the plastic earbud split in half. There was a fragile little two wires inside that big lace cord that snapped as soon as I tried to put the earbuds back together. Fail!! They broke in 3 days.

NOTE: At time of writing this review, the price for this seller is higher than others selling Koss "The Plug". Shop around!

My interest for this product is as a solution to listening to music, lectures, and movies while travelling, and I travel a lot. I have a set of Panosonic noise-cancelling headphones which were good (about five times more expensive than these earbuds) though bulky, but the plastic broke so they won't stay on my head now.

These earbuds are an excellent alternative to noise-cancelling headphones for the frequent traveller. I find them more comfortable for extended listening than most conventional headphones. The ability to seal out noise from the external environment is very good, and makes it possible to understand what actors are saying when watching a movie on an airplane.

The overall performance sound quality and noise blocking is not as good as the Bose noise cancelling headphones, but the Bose are 20 times as expensive, much less convenient to carry, and subject to damage from the rough world of the road warrior. If The Plug had an optional noise-cancelling unit (say, combined with the eq), it would be a killer combination are you listening, Koss?).

The sound is good. Bass-heavy, to be sure; I would like them better if they had a flatter response, but the product is marketed at the portable music crowd, and many of them are looking for dramatic bass rather than golden-ears sound.

Besides, mobile sound is always a compromise, it's just a question of whether the compromise they chose works for you.

Here are some problems I've heard and the solutions:

1. "They fall out of my ear." I think an older version of this product did not come with alternative cushions; the ones I bought recently (as pictured here) came with 3 alternative cushion pairs, one of which fit well in my somewhat large ears. To make them fit well, roll the cushions in your fingers and squeeze them down, then hold them in place in your ears while they adjust the fit. Also, it is possible to fashion your own cushions (easy modification to commercially available ear plugs from pharmacy); go to google and search for "koss plug mods".

2. What about when I have to replace the cushions, they'll get waxy/dirty with use? See last sentence of #1.

3. "They sound tinny". I have a sense that the sound was tinnier on an earlier version of these earbuds, judging from comments I've read in feedback and on the koss plug mods page. The purple plugs (as opposed to the older(?) blue ones) do not sound tinny to me; they seem a bit heavy on the bass instead. Koss also makes a 3-band eq (20 dollars) for their headphones that can be used to adjust the sound some. I have an eq on order, hoping it may temper the boomy bass a bit. Of course, your player may have a way of changing the color of the sound, but my laptop does not.

4. "They're easy to lose." The price of their tiny size and negligible weight, is that you need to be careful not to lose them. I've already lost a pair. Koss also makes a carrying case which may help, or you could just put them in a 35mm film canister. But at $... a pair (compared to $... for noise-cancelling headphones) I'll just keep a spare pair around in my travelling case.

Overall I'm pleased with the price/performance tradeoff for these earbuds, and they are an essential part of my travelling kit. They sound better than any other earbuds I've used, and they remove a good bit of the ambient sound, offering more pleasure in listening. I give four stars out of five because I'd prefer a less bassy sound, though some people will really like the way they sound.

I own 2 pairs of these and in a course of soon 5 years, they always been great, quality open backs. The sound is monitor grade and superbly comfortable. I am very pleased with quality of Samson products in general. I can wear them for hours with no fatigue at all. Considering their price point, you will be hard pressed to find anything that great. Samson also gives 3 years warranty on it, which I never had any chance to use, but it speaks of quality too.

I must begin by stating I am an aspiring audiophile and what I got from these phones was almost jaw-dropping accuracy and the most balanced and transparent sound south of 100 dollars. To begin these are the most affordable open cans that sound right and perhaps further even. It is no surprise that their sister brand Superlux is highly regarded in head-fi forums.

Althought the cans look plasticky and cheap they are sturdy, cable is thick enough althought I'd prefer a beefier one. The level of comfort they provide is more than acceptable and they clamp very little while not falling over your head if you tilt your noggin down.

The pads are kinda shallow and I would love to replece them by velour ones if I find ones that fit. I am pretty sure SQ will improve dramatically by posisioning the driver grille a little further but the guys at Samson did their job right by covering the driver grille with synthetic fabric so it does not press your ears so they are really comfy. These cans are really light despite their somewhat cumbersome structure they dissapear quickly when worn and they require exact positioning to appropriately listen to the the treble they offer.

These won't turn any heads for they are big but discrete and unassuming enough to take them out for a walk if the place is not noisy however the 10 foot cable would require a velcro strap or a similar measure for portable use and being open means you will hear external sounds and they will leak sound to the outside so wearing them in the tube may force you to raise volume to unhealthy levels annoying other people as well.

The Samson's are rated 32 ohms of impedance but won't sound very good out of low powered mp3 players. Amping them with the inexpensive and somewhat warm FIIO E6 would be a very nice idea for they open up and soundstage widens when amped.Of course a better amp will do them even more justice.

Although the sound of these cans seems balanced they seem to be slightly W-shaped in terms of sonic signature. Layering and sound staging is superb for the price. The treble is tamed without losing shimmer and the bass sounds reassuringly controlled even though I am not sure how deep in the sub-bass region they can go, bass sounds that well that it never gets overwhelming or bloated. You hear the notes clearly.

The RH600 portray the in your face kind of presentation for the mids sound a tad forward not shouty though but the overall coherence of their sound makes them very natural to my ears and leave pricier alternatives to shame. In fact they are quick enough to avoid smearing fast-paced notes and I tested them using the infamous Mogwai's "Mogwai Fear Satan" and they passed the test with flying colours, not a single note smeared and that song is famous to bring headpnones to their knees for it has a very dense wall of sound which is combined with very intense drumming so most consumer-oriented headphones cannot cope and strugle to show details with little or no luck at all.

I don't know how long they will last but the warranty is long enough to be happy with the purchase. To be concise they are as resolving, airy and transparent as their little price tag can buy

Update

After finishing burn-in I consider the Samson's a little inclined to the warm side of things although they never sound utterly dark, they remind me the Grado sound a little. I guess they can be compared to the SR60i or the SR80i they are energetic and upfront but sometimes their rendition of electronic dance music is strictly analytical and cold although they really shine with Rock music. It's amazing how they render electric guitars.

First of all I'm not an audiophile. I bought this headphone to play games on my computer. It replaced my old plantronics 650 headset. Out of the box it does sound clearer but it's like your head is inside a tin can. WIth some heavy tweaking on my xonar dx they sound better. Also do not get these if you want bass these will distort easily if you up the bass. If you have a fat head these will be uncomfortable.

I've had these headphones for about two years now, so I'll review them regarding how they now perform.

These headphones started out sounding not too bad, albeit a little cheap, but now, after about two years, they sound truly terrible. That would suggest inferior quality materials that degrade prematurely. There is a bump that has developed in the mid-range that makes the reproduction sound unpleasantly harsh, and will more than likely end up giving you an ear ache due to fatigue. The bass is heavy, thumping, and over-pronounced, while the treble is harsh, ill defined, and incapable of producing 'air', which is that wispy spacial feeling offered by very high audio frequencies. Some time ago I emailed Samson to ask them if they could supply a frequency response chart. They said they would do so but none has arrived and my reminders went ignored. So much for the reputation of American customer service, which is proving to be a complete myth the more I deal with these outfits.

I understand there is a modification by dismantling and adding a little circuitry to them which may well improve the sound if you wish to pursue this course, but that involves ability, time, risk, and the invalidation of warranty. Furthermore, as the headphones will soon degrade, such a modification will quickly prove pointless. Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, life's just too short to spend it messing around like that. You'd be better off paying a bit more for something with better quality, and having already sampled the alternative SR850s (laughingly titled 'Pro studio Headphones') it's definitely not in the range offered by Samson. I've heard better quality through cheaper, less marketed brands.
