The sound is excellent. The build quality is heavy duty. The wiring is solid. The fit is tremendous. Due to the different style and size of earpieces, I was able to achieve a seal which allows the bass to come throught very well.
I knocked it down one star because it does not have a good midrange. In all fairness to the product, I do not believe that a solid midrange is intended for this product. It is not meant to achieve a "blend" of sound. I believe that the earphone is designed to be for performance musicians who want to hear a clear separation of sound between instruments rather than a blended sound which is what most casual listeners would want. For a more blended sound with the fit that comes with the Shure earphone products, I would recommend a 530(three driver) or 420(two driver)earphone. The prices on Amazon and Amazon Marketplace are really quite competative.
These earphones are well packaged with the right accessories to help you use them "on the move" and to achieve a good fit in the ear. They are very comfortable to wear and achieve isolation through passive exclusion of outside sounds. The cables do not seem too susceptible to vibration noise. This is a good thing.
Lastly, as with all Shure products, I believe that it is a well made product. I would always recommend using a headphone amplifier to enhance the sound and make the earphone perform to its best level.

Well, I have to say that i had a HUGE expectation on the sound quality of these earphones, but after some trial, this expectation has not been met by far.
I purchased the SCL5 along with the complete SHURE PSM600 Wireless monitoring system, for my wife (who sings every week locally) and i was anxious to compare the sound quality on the SCL5 to my currently top in ears which are the Ultimate Ears triple 10 and with my backup earphones which are the Klipsch Custom 3.
After being trying all three with the PSM600 system, Ipod, Home amp, Pro tools hardware at the studio, etc, etc, etc i have to say that they are good pair of ear set, but when compared to the UE 10 or even the Kiplsch C3, they are not that good, in fact they are quite behind (at least from the UE10).
The SCL5 sounds very uneven along the frequency spectrum, it seems that they are set to perform like a bell shape frecuency response pattern (high mids are boosted against lows, low-mid and highs). I check my freq response capability twice a year (using my Doctor and going to the audiometer) and i can say that my ears are very flat responding to the normal human listening spectrum, therefore i trust my ears when they show me these frequency boost damp i explain here.
Ultimate Ears triple 10 are way more precise, crisp and even when compared to Shure SCL5. actually after trying for several months the UE10 i have decided to go for the custom molded Ultimate Ears for me and my wife (UE11 or UE18).
regarding construction, SHURE SCL5 are top notch, very sturdy, good and solid wiring, enclosure, etc. the only potential flaw is that the crossover is located in the "Y" spot of the cable, so if you by any chance crew the wiring, there goes the complete earpones to the trash. With the UEs you have replaceable wires for 15 USD, because the crossover are located into each ear piece and the wire is detachable. klipsch's biggest flaw is the very thin and stiff wire which form kinks all across it self. It has not caused any problems so far (7 months of usage) but i would not anticipate a life span as long as the SHUREs or UEs due strictly to the wiring.
Klipsch Custom 3 sound better and more balanced than the SCL5s, but UE10s are by far the best of all three, Klipsck (soundwise) the second and SCL5s the third, but all three are top range earphones so, if you do not have the chance to get all three like myself, go for the UEs without a doubt.

For pure sound quality, the SCL5 is second to none in the earbud realm, except for dedicated moulded earbuds that enter the $900 dollar range. With my other Shure models, I've found the alternate plastic earpieces to provide superior sound. Not the case with the SCL5. The standard earpieces provided the best overall soundstage, dynamic range, and presentation over all the other tips, which surprised me. These are the closest thing to plugging a speaker into your brain, and they are a delight to listen to.
So what's not to like? Well fatigue for one. I was excited about the prospect of jumping up to the SCL5s because the SCL4s are so darn comfortable. I can keep the 4s in my ear for 12 or 14 hours without any soreness, fatigue, or discomfort. The SCL5s are good for a couple of hours, but then you're kind of glad to have them out. I thought they would be even more comfortable than the 4s, given the price, but this was not the case. They go deep into the ear canal, which is part of the reason they sound so good, but the plastic on the outside housing rubs and creates soreness after a few hours.
The other issue is ease of use. I wind up fumbling with these to figure out how they fit in my ear every single time. The loops that go over and behind the ear bend out of place, so you wind up fiddling with them when you remove them from their case after storage. The SCL4s are instantly recognizable as to which ear they go into without looking at for the L or R. You have to look for the red (right) and blue (left) dots on these every time or you will try to jam a square peg into a round hole-so to speak.
So my summary would be if you're looking for sound above all else, get these. If you are looking for an earbud that sounds terrific, AND you can wear them all day, get the SCL4. I will get the pair of 4s that these replaced repaired, and I will probably migrate back to them eventually.

I play bass in our worship team and also in a rock band. I had been looking for a pair of in-ear monitors with good bass response. I had Sure's E3s, and they sounded ok, but the bass was lacking.
The SCL5s are much better. They have two drivers, so I would expect the clarity to be better, and it is. The bass response is also better.
With these iems, I also got custom ear molds, which improve the response even further.
I am quite pleased.
Coming from the single drivers to these has been a real pleasant experience. As a performing musician, this is the only way to go. A stereo mix onstage is so preferable to a wedge blasting at you. The dual drivers really improved my mix in the lows and cleaned up the mids. An enormous improvement over the single drivers. Nice choice of ear pieces and a pretty comfortable fit overall. I recommend them highly.
