I purchased this unit used because I am beginning to do some small scale video production using a consumer grade Sony HD camcorder, and I needed better field sound capabilities. I also looked at the Sign Video ENG44 and the JuicedLink CX-231. They are both nice units, but even as affordable as they are, were too much for my current budget. The ROLLS works as advertised. It connects to my camera with a 1/8" mini jack to 1/8" mini jack cable. It provides vastly improved sound over the camcorder's built in mic, and is also significantly better than my cheap camera mounted shotgun mic. My particular camera has two settings for microphone sensitivity, Normal and Low. Usually, using a mic mixer will defeat the AGC (Automatic Gain Control)circuit of the camcorder. On my particular camera it does not have this effect, but I found I got better sound using the LOW setting with the mic mixer.PROS: Small form factor. (about the size of a paperback book) I put a strap on mine so I can carry it over my shoulder. I can also strap it to a leg of my tripod with small bungee cords. Works well. Runs off of 2 9V batteries. Very affordable.
CONS: Not sure if it is my camera or the mixer, but audio is slightly noisy. (as in sound floor hiss) Not enough to ruin the sound, but not completely clean either. Mic gain knobs are very sensitive. A slight bump of the knob can change the levels significantly. It uses recessed pins with jumpers to select Phantom Power ON/OFF for each mic input. You need to use needle nose pliers to change the jumpers. Not very practical in the field. These should have been switches. If you loose one of the tiny jumpers, it would not be easy to find a replacement. I opted to leave mic 1 input with Phantom power OFF and mic 2 input with Phantom power ON.
BOTTOM LINE: A great little mic mixer for the money with a few quirks you can learn to live with.We were challenged with a unique monitor setup and this was the perfect fit. The quality is very good. I love it!
