Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I have a headphone addiction. There are dozens of pairs on my shelves waiting for me to choose from. They range from high end Sennheiser HD-600s (my all around favorites) to Beyer Dynamic to AKG to the dozens of Fostex T-20s I have in my studio. But I'm always looking for the next pair that will satisfy my collecting needs.

These Pioneer Steel Wheels are the latest addition to my stash. They look great and are closed cup design so they block out a respectable amount of ambient sound (like a drumset or loud TV). The ear pieces are somewhat small and don't fit over the ear like larger designs but they were adequate and comfortable enough for shorter listening periods, although I can image they would feel like a vice grip after a few hours.

The build quality of the headphones is fine but the cable is about as cheap as any I've seen and it's much too short for anything but iPod listening. The wire is thin and the mini-plug feels like it will break if it's subjected to long term use or any sort of accidental mishandling. I also had an issue with the headband not being large enough for my head. I had to move it from the top of my head to the back but I'm really tall with a large noggin and doubt most people will have a problem.

But all that really matters is how these headphones sound. Well, they sound odd. The top and bottom end are really hyped and the midrange is scooped out creating a comb-filtered sound. You know that hollow sound you get when you cup your hands over your ears or listen to something through an empty cardboard tube from a roll of paper towels? Or imagine taking an equalizer and cutting 4kHz by 12dB and boosting the bass and treble all the way. I guess the philosophy of that design is to give you that humungo sound the kids dig but I find it annoying. The majority of music is in the midrange so these headphones actually reduce most of what you want to hear in leu of creating a hyped, thumping, sparkly sound. But remember you're sacrificing the vocal, snare drum, guitars, piano and most every other instrument to achieve that boombox sound. Not my thing.

So, except for the headband that's nearly too small, the cable that's thin, cheap and too short and the hyped sound that emphasizes the top and bottom end and lacks midrange these headphones are fine. But the $80 price tag seems high to me. I've bought other phones for that price and gotten much more out of them. In fact, these are just about the worst sounding $80 headphones I have. I suggest looking at Sennheiser or AKG for amazing sounding alternatives at the same price point.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Everyone could use a good set of headphones and I know some people who own multiple sets so that they can reach for just the right headphones when they need them. I own only a few sets, and I have found that the Pioneer Steel Wheels headset is an average set of headphones that will suffice for most basic uses.

What makes Pioneer Steel Wheels headphones so average in quality? Well, there are a few reasons to consider them middle of the road, but let's talk about the positive points first. These headphones are attractive in appearance and I like that they are so lightweight. The manufacturer lists the weight at around four ounces (about 120 grams), which isn't much at all and you can barely tell you're wearing them. They do a fine job blocking sounds from the outside, and they fit snugly but are comfortable and can be worn throughout the day.

Now, let's take a close look at the flaws with these headphones because there are a few. The greatest problem I have with these headphones is the short cord lengthit is only about four feet and this is not nearly enough for many common uses. The cord is very thin, too, and while this hasn't caused any direct problems, it just doesn't seem like it will last. It seems to flimsy and nondurable.

The other problem I noticed with Pioneer Steel Wheels is that the sound isn't as crisp and clear as with other headphones and earbuds I have used. The main problem I notice is the same one that others have noted: The sound comes through with excess bass. I can tell a noticeable difference when I wear these headphones vs. when I listen to the same music source with different headphones or with no headphones at all. These headphones impart a distinct basslike sound, much like you would hear if you turned up the bass control knob a few notches. However, I found the sound was perfectly fine if listening to, say, an audiobook or a news/talk program. Only with certain types of music do I notice the problem.

So, like I said, these headphones look nice and they are confortable to wear, but when you factor in the issues with certain sounds and the short, flimsy cord, I can only rate them average overall. Serious headphone fanatics will probably find them inadequate, but for the rest of us, they are good enough to give a small recommendation.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program First off, I received these via the Amazon Vine program, and, I have to say, these are some of the nicest on-ear headphones I have used to date.

The plastic structure looks outstanding, is very light and overall very comfortable. The fit of the ear pads is just right for me ... snug, yet cozy ... Even when I am wearing my glasses. Unfortunately the top has no padding, which would have been nice (just plastic resting on the top of my head). The 3.9 foot long cord (I would have liked a little longer) with its 3.5 mm mini-plug works great for mp3 players and other audio players.

With a frequency response of 5 Hz to 28,000 Hz and 40 mm drivers, you get an impressive range of both high and low musical notes ... Sweet sounds! I also like that, while I am playing music, these headphones really seem to reduce the outside noise (nice for the office with loud neighbors).

Overall ... These lightweight on-ear headphones are very cool looking, comfortable, and sound fantastic ... Very nice for the price and I would recommend.

Great sound quality. In fact I have them on right now. They cancel some noise but not all. They could have a little more bass though. But for the money they are great.

I chose the four star rating because of the headphone design and most of all it's sound quality. I was pleasantly surprised at the cans range and power. You can hear alot of the musical details, from many if not all of the instruments in a song. The singing or speaking voices are clear as well. Overall, I would recommend these headphones to anyone, especially to those who do not like the bulky over the ear cans. These cans fold up and can be stored away easily when traveling, etc. I would have given them a perfect score had they produced a more powerful range of sound 30,000hz. Get them anyway and you will not be disappointed!
