The iRig is a masterpiece of simplicity. You plug it in to the iPad and it works. No tweaking anything it does exactly what it claims to do turns the ipad or iphone into a pretty authentic replication of hardware guitar effects pedals. Its probably best suited for practice and songwriting, particularly if your song writing leans heavily on guitar tones. Plug in your guitar, slip on a set of headphones and start improvising in no time you'll find yourself tweaking sounds that are amazing. It requires a purchase of the Amplitube software for around 15 bucks so you're talking about a 50 dollar investment at the end of the day. But if you want to have the capability of sitting in your living room and wailing without disturbing anyone around then this is it.

This is just an analog adapter for the built-in analog mic on the iPhone and iPad and consequently sounds awful. Thin and noisy and overpriced for what it does. Mine sits in the drawer unused. The Apogee Jam by contrast is a dedicated analog to digital converter that delivers better, more solid, much less noisy guitar sound to compatible apps. Amplitube software on the iOS is stuck using the poor quality iRig interface. Others more modern iOS architecture software like GarageBand can use the Apogee Jam. Check the software you want to use is compatible with the interface you intend to purchase.

Great little device to listen to your guitar or bass guitar through your headphones or speakers. Clearer than the amp I own for the bass guitar!!!

Having used Line 6 devices like Guitar Port and Pod XT Live, I can definitely say this is a great product!! Sound quality is amazing! I love the practicality of just carrying around a pair of (decent) headsets and a small guitar cable. The ability to jam along your favorite tracks really makes this product a must-have.

I tried this device with an iPod Touch with two different guitars and two different sets of headphones. I had to crank up the volume to 10 in both the Amplitube software and on the guitars to get marginally acceptable volume. The volume limit on the iPod is turned off as recommended by the manufacturer.

Updated review: I am upgrading my review from 1 to 4 stars. After surfing various forums online, I learned of additional variables you have to adjust to get decent volume and reduce noise. First and foremost, use the physical volume buttons on the side of the iPod/iPhone/iPad to turn the volume up to the max. Second, go into Setup in the Amplitube software and turn the "Level In" down (to reduce noise) and turn the "Level Out" up (to increase volume). After doing this, I found I could back off the guitar and/or software amp volume and still get a decent sound. Exact settings will vary with your guitar. You'll just have to keep tweaking to get the optimal sound. Once things are tweaked, the system works fine. I'm giving four stars instead of five because of inadequate instructions in the package.
