Update: I'm sadly taking this way down to a 2 from a 5 and not recommending a purchase. While these headphones are the most intelligent design I've tried, they do slip out even still and they do break easily. I'm on my 4th pair (all free replacements) and I've had many problems. On two pairs, one driver developed a crackle. On the other two the housing broke as you've seen in many other reviews. Sony did come out with a better designed and cheaper version that doesn't use the XBA-series balanced armature. I'm tempted to try those but in the mean time my hunt for a solid workout/running in-ear set continues... (Denon Exercise Freak, Etymotic Research, Klipsch Image, other Sony sports, Sennheisser, Bose, B&W C5, and the cheap ones all of them have failed me)

Original Review:

My background:

Techie, not-quite-audiophile, runner, frequently at the gym, own dozens of headphones from Etymotic's to Sennheiser to Sony to Apple, listen daily, read gadget news.

Bottom line:

If you're looking for a great headphone for working out or running and you know what natural sound is like (i.e. a flat response curve), then stop reading. These are underpriced for their quality and they are by far the best fit for working out. Get them now and be happy.

These headphones mark the end of my years-long search to find a great workout headphone. I've gone through many headphones trying to find something that was a great fit and had at least reasonable audio quality. These turn out to have superb quality and the fit is better than any other for workout purposes.

Pros:

No-tangle cord It does what it should. I've bunched them up and shoved them in pockets/bags and pulled them in and out days later unraveling them takes just a couple seconds.

Ear loops and fit There are better fits to be had for every day listening but for working out and especially running, these are amazing. The loops fit such that cord noise is diminished (but present still) and if you tug on the cord, it doesn't move the driver much. And if the seal comes undone a little (rare) then all you have to do is gently push the driver to seat it again because the loops hold it right over your ear canal. It doesn't drift around and twist or force you to play with the fit. The loops themselves are comfortable so long as you don't try to cinch your ear off. The rubber coating is durable and soft.

Audio quality It's comparable to similarly priced high-end IEMs. It can drive really clearly at high volume which is great for running (I always crank it up when I'm running up a hill). You'll find higher quality options for every day listening but I haven't heard anything nearly as good in a sports headphone. For those of you tuned to Sony's bass-filled low-end, these will sound flat and lifeless. You'll adjust. The bass is there and it's actually quite amazing especially after a good long burn-in. However, for some people's purposes, a thick, incorrect, pronounced bass response from cheaper headphones is what you want for working out. For me, these are so comfortable and sound so great that I've actually switched to using these nearly all of the time. I'm planning on getting a multi-driver XBA for non-workout listening but in the mean time these are my favorite.

Water seal I sweat worse than anyone I've seen at the gym and I haven't had a problem. I've killed several ipod shuffles but these are going strong after about a month of use. I've also run in the rain with them. The only thing is that if your ears get full of sweat or water, you'll have a little bit of slipping on the seal. See above about fit it's easy to re-seat them.

Sound isolation I give it decent rating here. It's not meant to block all noise and for running outside I wouldn't want it to. But you will definitely hear a little outside noise. Overall though, it's a good amount of isolation.

Cons:

Cord length It's long and although I hate a bulky in-line adapter, I kind of wish I could split it in half sometimes. The little cord adjustment kit and clip it come with are the typical sony sports pieces that are good but just plain annoying to get on and off so I never bother.

Pressure in seal Any fit of this style is going to have a certain amount of air-tightness to it. In the case of etymotics, the seal is completely air-tight. That means when you run, the pressure of your body jolting causes your ear to jump up and down in pressure making running uncomfortable, not to mention unstable (inner ear balances us after all). These headphones are much better than Etymotics, but the seal is just slightly aggressive. This is good when lifting weight but for running if you try to adjust the fit and accidentally push it a little too hard, you'll squeeze out air and create a really tight low-pressure seal. It's not a deal-breaker. It's just a little tricky at times. I've gotten used to it without a problem really. It doesn't cause me any pressure issues while running.

RMA'd first unit The original that I got from J&R through amazon had a defect where something (likely the water seal material) was loose in the left driver. At various frequencies the loose material would rattle. RMA'ing wasn't a big deal and the second unit has been fine.

When I first received the product, I was like WOW, what great design.

It fits much better compare to the apple headphone.

I used it for three months, ran 4 times a week on a treadmill and

about 7miles each time. It fits firmly but not to the level of

discomfort.

Then both sides broken. And they all happened on the same spot

on the R&L side, around the little red spot above the sony label.

Just to be clear, I never used the headphone when not running and I

consider myself always took good care of them, this is the first pair

of headphone that broken on my ears.

First, let me start by saying I am a huge fan of Sony products. I had high expectations for the XBA-S65, but it fell short on one hugely critical thing the fit in my ears. Even with the largest cone size on the buds, they still popped out of my ears immediately after I pushed them in. I tried pushing them back in a hundred times during my hour-long cardio workout, but the sweat kept them from staying secure in my ear canals. I guess I have large ears, but I don't think they are abnormally large. I am legitimately shocked how even the largest cones were too small. It's such a shame too because the mids/treble sounded great on these. The bass was non-existent like many of the other reviewers said, so if you want bass these will disappoint you on that alone. I really wish these had worked for me. The whole reason I bought them was so that I'd have a great pair of earbuds that wouldn't come out during my workout. The only reason they didn't completely fall off my ears was because of the loops that kept them dangling after they popped out. I am beyond disappointed, and I returned them to Amazon for a refund. If you have slightly large ears, look elsewhere.

I bought these headphones because I read great reviews about the sound quality compared specifically to other performance head phones. I was contemplating buying the Beats sport version, but they were about 2x the price of the Sony headphones.

The sound quality of the Sony XBA's was rated to be close if not better than the Beats, which I would argue is pretty accurate. However, the reason for the poor rating is that the these are very DELICATE headphones.

I use these solely at the gym, and they are classified as being sports headphones. To me this means being able to put up with sweat, a little tugging while running ,etc.

Well these didn't last 6 months of 5-10 hours of use per week at the gym. The loop that goes around the ear has slowly ripped out from where it connects to the bottom wire, and they no longer stay on my ear in a stable way. I'm very disappointed in the durability of these sports headphones, as I take good care of my electronics too.

I understand some wear and tear is going to happen, but these are very flimsy and any tugging on the ear look causes them to rip out of where they were originally put together.

The ear buds don't stay all the way in your ear very long while jogging. They tend to come out and dangle in your ear as they are held by the over the ear strap. The sound quality goes down when they aren't shoved in all the way in your ear. When they are in your ear,the sound quality is pretty good but the over the ear strap isn't very durable. I only use these earbuds for jogging and they tore after about 20 uses. I now use a $10 pair of sony sport ear buds with a durable plastic over the ear thingy. They are more comfortable but the sound quality is a little less.

These headphones are a bargain. After countless positive reviews I took a chance on these and am generally impressed. I, like most others, had to purchase based on reviews since Ultrasone has no retailers in my area. The reviews were bang on.

My criteria were:

-closed cans (good isolation, low to negligible leakage, compact enough for travel).

-efficient (easy to drive, high sensitivity)

-FUN frequency response, with engaging sound.

I have a set of open air ATH-AD700's which have absolutely shining mids and detailed highs but are void of bass. They are about as portable as an agoraphobic. I listen to strings and vocals at home though so I needed something for electronic and dub out and about. For this purpose these are fantastic.

Real quickly I'll just say that both style and build quality are absolutely superb. Feels German: tight and clinically engineered. Both isolation and leakage are at least par for the course. Listening to these at moderate to high volume on a red-eye flight will be a non-issue. Some people have commented on comfort but for my average sized head and ears they are excellent. Not as soft on the skull as the ATH-M50 but not as hot either. Overall a non-issue once again. Cord length is a little long for a portable can, but that's by no means a deal-breaker.

Based on reviews I was expecting the following from these headphones:

-good, punchy, accurate bass response.

-life-like, sparkly highs.

-somewhat recessed mids.

-above average soundstage.

-overall a fun and engaging sound.

It was all true.

At first listen these were actually fairly disappointing: hollow and even tinish comes to mind. I have owned them for about 100 hours now and they have been playing for about 90 of them though, and at this moment they have most definitely evolved, and come to life. Bass response is tight and accurate. If you are a bass head you MAY like these but the bass signature is more suited for audiophile tastes. If you want brain-shaking bass you may be better off with the Sony XB product line and just EQ them for any vocal tracks. The highs absolutely shine. Pendulum, daft punk, Benny Benassi...awesome! Adele, Leona Lewis, Frank Sinatra? Craaaaaaap.

Take note: when people love a particular pair of headphones they tend to cushion the weaknesses of the cans by saying things like "mids are somewhat recessed." What they mean is "the mids are totally, totally recessed." Now I'm probably being overcritical because most people say these benefit from a 200+ hour burn-in and I'm not even half way there. They also affirm that it's the mids that finally come into grasp during the process. We shall see. At any rate, if you listen to vocal extensively then don't get these, there are better alternatives (I'm listening to Mia Martina's "Burning" and due to her vocal frequency the song sounds outstanding). If you are doing vocal tracking steer completely clear.

Compared to the ATH-M50 these are such a delightful step up, unless you are monitoring. They have a more exciting sound, and have most, or all of high-end detail of the M50, without the muddy mid-section. Both sets lack mid-range response but the M50 covers it by seeping the bass into the mids and the result is just not enjoyable for most kinds of music in my opinion. These have soundstage making them somewhat less forgiving but also less pretentious. It's almost as if they warn you only seconds into a strong vocal track that they will not perform their best for songs like this. For almost everything else these will be at least good, and for most ears absolutely fabulous. For build-quality, sound signature, and audio quality (for my genres) they give the sensation of much more expensive headphones.

RECOMMENDED.

Well the Ultrasone HFI-580's came in today. Guess this is a good as place as any to write my opinion. They sounded so good I had to share. :)

First impression of them. They're very meaty, much meatier than the inexpensive Koss UR-15C I was using prior. (A $20 pair of headphones (when I bought them).) The Koss don't sound "bad" per-se, especially since they've been through multi-hundred hours of burn-in, and have settled in to sound as good as they can.

The looks are very bold, and they look very impressive close up. They may be targeted towards the more edgier crowd, as they're very "in-your-face" and don't have as a muted appearance as some other higher-end phones. Could be good or bad on your point of view, personally I really like it.

Now, the sound. Since comparing it to the Koss is a travesty in and of itself (as it utterly dominates them), my other comparison comes from Sony MDR-710 LP ($70 when I bought them, Ultraportable supra-aural headphones. Owned for going on 2 years.)

Now the Sony's sound pretty darn good, but they are supra-aural versus the Ultrasone and Koss which are circum-aural. The Sony are the reason I decided to purchase these Ultrasone, because they really opened up how a decent pair of headphones can really change the way you listen to things. I have also owned a great many cheap earbuds and circum-aural headphones in my life($5 10), so I know how the sound stacks up to cheapy's too.

Being circum-aural has advantages because of attenuation of outside noise. I first thought about gushing about how awesome they sound, but then I decided some actual thought out impressions would be more helpful. :) It's hard to describe since I'm not in the habit of reviewing headphones, so I don't know all of the terms one uses to describe the nuances of headphones to another person, but here it goes.

The sound is very "rich" compared to my other headphones I own, I don't know how to put it, there is more detail and it just sounds "fuller". I intentionally picked tracks I had listened to many times, because I knew how they sounded pretty well from my other pairs. I was picking up pitch shifts in notes and sounds that were previously undetectable. It just seems like it covers a much broader range of sound and the sound is fantastic. I listened both to CD music, and mp3's. I didn't have any DVD audio to test... other than DVD movies.

Bass. As I said the bass notes are very important to me. They actually tie the Sony MDR-710 here, you'd be surprised at how bassy those little Sony's are, and I might go so far as to say they actually have more bass than the Ultrasones. But again, it just seemed like the Ultrasone's convey more detail in bass, probably due to being more isolated from the circum-aural design. (Keep in mind the Sony's have about 40 hours of burn-in, and the Ultrasone's are out of the box.)

On DVD's, again I was picking up more detail. The sound of peoples clothes as they rubbed together was one thing that stuck out. Footsteps, breathing, just overall much more sound detail. I was pretty impressed overall, I watched Matrix Reloaded to test the action scenes. (Say what you want about the movie itself but the action scenes are incredible.)

Gaming. Well what better game to test on than GTA-IV since it just came out. (I chose the 360 to test on because my PC although using optical out to my receiver does not output 5.1 from the optical out.) I figured here is where the much touted "S-Logic" feature pattented by Ultrasone would finally show it's colors. It just sounded like a really good pair of stereo headphones, although I haven't ever listened to a pair of "true" 5.1's (3 speakers & sub in each ear cup). But from what I read, most 5.1 headphones can't deliver other than LTB. I did actually shop around for 5.1 headphones but I didn't find any with the right combination of features and aesthetics that appealed to me (USB-based is automatic disqualification for me).

So maybe S-Logic does work, this is something I will just have to give more than 30 minutes to. I did actually stand stationary and close my eyes and spin the control stick until I was unsure of my position, then slowly started rotating, detecting if sound was coming from left or right is easy as it only plays in one ear, but as it came to front to back, I did manage to accurately pick if the source was coming from in front of me or behind me 3/3 times. This is only a rough test and 3/3 could have just been luck, but I didn't spend much more time testing this.

Ultrasone claims you can achieve the same level of listening volume with lower decibles, due to their S-Logic off-center drivers, this was something I didn't believe and was skeptical of. Turns out it is true and then some, I actually had to turn the volume down a bit from what I usually have it set it.

Overall I am very impressed and think it was money well spent. They won't be replacing the Sony as those are so compact when they fold up and can slip into a pocket easily. Rather they will compliment them mainly for home use and some mixing.

I have had these headphones for a few weeks now and I absolutely love them, they sound amazing. Put simply they sound like movie theatre speakers/club speakers.

**IMPORTANT** They have a "V" shaped sound curve, which means the lows/bass are forward, mids are recessed and highs are forward. They are FANTASTIC for techno, rap and for my tastes good for hard metal. For music with mostly mids, like jazz, classical, orchastra ect these are not ideal. That being said I still love listening to soundtrack/orchastra music on these, it sounds way better on these than on my macbook pro speakers. The bass is always loud but is not overpowering or muddy.

PROS

Sound quality throughout the sound spectrum, BASS if you love bass get these!! Build quality, 5 year warranty, They go LOUD, decentralized drivers reduces listening fatigue/hearing damage(Ultrasone claims 40% less and I agree), Surround Sound does work well, very good sound isolation (keeps your music in and cuts background noise).

CONS

Comfort is mediocre, they are not uncomfortable but can become uncomfortable if you listen for extended periods of time. Portability, the cord is 10ft long, and is not detachable. Long burn in time, Ultrasone says 50 hrs.

DETAILS

Lows/Bass, As said before the lows are incredible. They can produce a phenomenal loud rumble, that is lower than my macbook pro speakers can go. The bass is loud and VERY punchy, at moderately loud volumes I can feel the bass kick in my ears. They are incredibly fun to listen to, especially with techno music, the BOOM BOOM is addictive. Bass guitar sounds great on these too, loud, punchy and much lower and less flat than it sounds on my macbook pro. The bass is also very clear and tight, I can clearly hear the bass guitar strings vibrating. The bass is loud without being overpowering, this is even more the case when they are burnt in(yes burn in does make a difference)

Mids: The mids are very clear and very, very good (though not quite as good as the lows/highs)and can be intruded upon by the bass, you can clearly hear lows in the background taking center-stage along with your mids during a mids part of a song. This is less of a problem once they are burned in and to what degree this happens to depends greatly on the song. That being said this sound characteristic has grown on me and I like it for metal and most orchestra stuff. If the bass is too much you can use Itunes or another equalizer to turn it down, in my experience this totally solves the problem.

Highs: Fantastic, crisp, clear and never shrill or piercing. In my experience these wont make highs that would hurt your ears in situations where other headphones would. The highs are a bit loud compared to the recessed mids.

Comfort: The earcups are very comfortable, the headband does not have a ton of padding (though the padding there does soften up). After about and hour of listening the headband can bother the top of your head a bit but in my experience a simple adjustment, pulling them back or forward, will fix that. For VERY VERY 2hrs+ long listening sessions you may want to take a break for a few mins. Other ppl complain about the clamp they have on your head, I don't have a very wide head and I never found this to be an issue. They also stretch out and lose the clamping effect.

Build quality: I have only had them for a few weeks but they seem very sturdy, I wear glasses with them and have them on for about an hour each day. The glasses leave indents in the earcups but this goes away and it has not done any damage or left any permanent marks. The cord is very long, 10 ft, and is not detachable, but it is very thick and sturdy, it is thicker than a mac charger cable and almost as thick as a ps2 controller cable.

LACK OF LISTENING FATIGUE: The decentralized drivers eliminate any fatigue on your ears. I listen to them at moderatley loud volumes and they don't bother my ears while other headphones would. Ultrasone claims 40% less pressure on your ear drums and I agree. For those who care about their hearing but like loud music, this is a major +

In my opinion, these are the best headphones you can get at this price range. It's a steal for what Amazon is selling them for these days. Even after paying duties (I live in Canada), I was more than happy with the price. That said, I haven't tried the famous M50s from Audio Technica, which I think are the basis for comparison for closed cans under $200.

The reason why I chose these over the M50s came down to portability. These aren't THAT much smaller, but they feel smaller and easier to carry. The M50s just seem too big for my liking when listening to my iPod.

In terms of sound, I've tried these straight from an iPhone and they are very easy to drive. One of the biggest things I like is that they leak very little sound, even at high volumes. The bass is deep and very strong, at times even in-your-face strong, but never uncomfortable. Highs are very clear and not too sparkly. Mids are a bit recessed but they are definitely present. The soundstage is great. Since the headphones are easy to drive, using an amp won't make that much of a difference, but I tried them with my Fiio E17 and still they sounded wonderful.

Build quality is superb. Sturdy and stylish. They are mostly made of plastic, but don't let that fool you. I can't hear any creaking on my set. My only two complaints would be that the ear pads fit too tight over your ears. It's as if the head band itself is too tight and closed. But it is definitely not a deal breaker. The other is the HUGE cable. Seriously, I can wrap it around my iPhone until you can't recognize it's an iPhone anymore! But the upside is you can listen to your home setup from a distance.

As of this review, I own three pairs of headphones: the 580s, a set of D2000s, and a set of Shure 535 IEMs. I think I got all my bases covered now. The Denons are great for home listening. The 580s give me my bass fix on the go. And the Shure give me the balance I like when listening to non-electronic music. If only I had more money to spend on headphones...

Either way, get these! You won't regret it at this price ($120 at time of writing).

EDIT: a full month after owning these, I have returned them and got the Audio-Technica M50 instead. The tightness of the Ultrasone clamp, coupled with the poor padding, made the headphones incredibly uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time. If you have a big head, these may not be for you. Really happy with the Audio-Technica now. Audio quality is on par with the Ultrasone. The only thing perhaps is that the Ultrasone set had way punchier bass (not to say the Audio-Technicas don't, just not as much).

After 80 hours of break-in, I'm really impressed with the 580s. They've calmed down and opened up into a powerful and energetic sounding headphone with amazing bass.

I've listened to the 580s on an unamped Clip+, a PC with a Asus Xonar D1, and a PC with a Asus Xonar Essence STX, using a mix of mostly FLACS and some high bit rate MP3s (generally v0 VBR or 320kbps). Obviously, the HFI-580s perform a little better at higher volumes with deep bass with the dedicated headphone amp of the STX, but their low impedance allowed them to even sound excellent with the Clip+. In fact, it's amazing to think about how one could get amazing bass sound out of a Clip+ and the HFI-580s for less than what an iPod Touch costs.

The 580s strong point is obviously with EDM and other bass heavy music, which I listen to about half the time. No contest. The HFI 580s are great, an all around better headphone than my Sony MDR-V6s. When it comes to mid-bass and low frequency bass, the HFI-580s are like a good enthusiast level sub paired with mid level towers in a home audio setup; I know that they are hitting down pretty low. In listening to Ludacris's Get Back, I could feel a slight tingling in my arms from the ultra low frequencies. With other bass heavy EDM tracks, the 580s could put out significant midbass slam pressure that one can feel on the ears.

With other genres where there is any mid-bass or lower, the HFI 580 really does a nice job of foregrounding the bass for those that want that, and pleasurably so given the quality. For instance, last week I watched the Godfather. Since I occasionally get into a classical kick, I decided to listen to Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra's Theme from the Godfather. The bass in that piece is so important for the tone, and the HFI 580 did a marvelous job of conveying the mood of the song. Then when coupled with the nice bass fill, the S-Logic soundstaging also did a marvelous job for me on the new Incubus HQ Live album.

So as others have pointed out, it's all there with a good tight powerful bass sound with plenty of texture. It really is like having an expensive sub built right in your phones. I own quite a few good subs, and the bass in the 580s is of equivalent quality to what you would have to spend $500 to $1000 MSRP for a sub for home audio at BestBuy. For anyone who would consider themselves in the car audio subwoofer SQ group, the HFI 580 would be an excellent choice. Although I could see how those listeners that would belong in the car audio SPL subwoofer crowd might be disappointed. The bass seems to be running a little hot, but maybe not massively enough for serious SPL bassheads (although bass EQ and a headphone amp could cure that).

Finally, I also have seen some comments on Amazon complaining a lot about sibiliance. I think some of those comments are a result of one or more of the following three factors:

1) Not enough break-in. While the treble is a little aggressive and bright (that can be tamed with a little EQ), burn-in greatly improves on what they sound like out of the box.

2) Revealing nature of the headphones. The treble does have some good clarity, and poorly recorded EDM and rock is going to reveal itself. At the same time, I'm also hearing detail that was not there before in good recordings.

3) The recessed mids, which stress the treble. Particularly if listening to something that is bass light where the treble will call even more attention to itself.

All-in-all, I wish I could give these headphones 5 1/2 stars!!!

I got this little interface to go in my bag with my Macbook Air. Tiny laptop, tiny interface. See?

Pros:

it's tiny

it's built like a tank

there's very little noise

latency is very low

overall sound quality is excellent with my guitar or my dynamic mics.

Cons:

it's not Core Audio compliant you'll have to install drivers on your Mac.

there's no 48v so you're stuck with dynamic mics. Not that there aren't good ones, it's just a limitation

Very light (because it's tiny) and the weight of your guitar/mic cable can and will pull it off the desk. I'm considering affixing a few oz of lead inside the case :D

All in all, if you're looking for a very portable audio interface particularly for guitar input this one is awesome. If you can take a little more bulk, I'd recommend the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (which, unfortunately, wasn't available when I bought this one).

I ordered this unit with a lapel mic to use with my video camera. When it arrived, it came with the handheld mic, not suitable for my application. So I contacted the seller to correct the problem and they informed me that they didn't carry the lapel version. They quickly gave me and RMA so there was no problem getting my money back, but I was dissapointed that I didn't get what I had ordered. It looks like they have fixed the listing on Amazon, so as long as you want the hand-held version, go for it. To be fair, I never even plugged the mic in so I don't know how it sounded or what range it had but I will say again that the customer service was good.

Aesthetically, these headphones are beautiful. They look amazing and like the article mentioned, I had a hard time choosing between the two colors. I decided to go with the red and blacks. But the color schemes alone take you back to the Jordan days. They feel sturdy and expensive. Just overall, they look and feel definitely like a high end and high quality headphone.

Now on to sound: I think they are great and produce a high quality sound. I feel that they do really well in isolated high treble areas (more vocals and less bass) and they do really well in isolated Bass and beats sounds but when they are combined, the bass tends to fall in the background. I'm a person that loves vocals and lyrics a lot so I notice that a lot. I have a lot of friends that love the beat and bass more than anything and could probably listen to a beat with a random hook. I think people who focus on Bass will not particularly get the full use and feel of these headphones because they amplify everything else involved in the tracks, but, on the other hand, music lovers and eclectic tastes will no doubt be satisfied. That intense sensitivity the article mentions is truly prevalent when listening to well mastered tracks and albums.

I love how you can separate the different components of a song and truly hear the music and sound. I enjoy how it eliminates the outside sound and essentially zones you out from the rest of the world. "Plug in, Fade out" could not be a more perfect slogan, not only because it sounds great but because its very true. I found myself lost in my music while running and have to pull the headphones off my ears a couple times to make sure I wasn't blasting the music to loud to disturb others. I love how they can fit around my entire big-ass ear. I did get a little irritated using them while running but I think that is just from switching from in-ear headphones to over-ear ones. I just need to get used to the feel since I've been using in-ear headphones for the past 5 years or so.

Overall, these headphones have been great. They've helped me escape from the problems and realities of the world, as well as, allowing me to focus on those same issues and life itself. You won't be worried about anything but the music; simply what headphones should do.

A great product at a great price. Comparable to the other headphones in the market but at a price that is 30-50% less, you can not go wrong with these. Very comfortable, stylish, and produce quality sound. I would definitely recommend owning a pair.

Before buying these I was definitely skeptical ... Most headphones these days aren simply hyped up due to the endorsement they receive or the advertising budgets they have. The crown series definitely did not disappoint ... I have a pair of the Beats by Dre and comparing the two ... The beats seem very bass heavy and made out of junky plastic and everyone knows they cost a fortune. Plugged Inc's Crown series hit the nail on the spot. They feel snugg on top of your ears and deliver a perfect blend of highs, mids, and lows. No sloppy bass or hollow treble. You also get a detachable, gold plated cable with track control and a mic which is compatible with the iPhone.

The headphones are loud in design and loud in general. I am looking forward to the rest of their products ... Few things I would hope for (Im sure they are headed in that direction) ... is on OVER the ear headphones ... maybe a carrying case ... and/or customization in the colors. A black matte finish would look sick!

Definitely happy with my purchase!

Great product! Great sound quality, with a cool design, and real world functionality. This product is a bargain at the price and comparatively speaking matches or exceeds all its competitors at a fraction of the cost. The attributes I value the most are the comfort along with the clear and crisp sound quality. I look forward to following the growth of this company if this product is a sign of things to come the future is bright.

I use this in conjunction with the Audio Tools iOS app for live sound RTA function. Downloaded the calibration file from Dayton Audio and mic works well. More accurate than the built in mic and cheaper than all the alternatives. Sure it's not a $1000 measurement mic, but it's more than usable and extremely portable. A good alternative to the MicW.

Not crazy about the plastic housing and have no need for the extra input, but it's a minor issue.

Excellent mic, use it every day, with easy to follow instructions to calibrate with my iPad, exactly what I needed. And recommended to every pro audio guy.

This is a fantastic little microphone. I used it to record some Nat-Sounds and voice for a couple of projects rather than using it as a measurement mic because it was the perfect size for my phone.

People who have not used condensers should be aware of the difference between them and dynamic mics. It will pick up everything from wind to people rustling papers ten feet away. However, in a recording studio or quiet space the quality is amazing.

When using it on my S3, I ended up having to play with setting to have it output into larger audio files since it was picking up so much.

I've recommended this to student journalists and podcasters who have found it to be suitable for their needs.

Mic came with tin case with instructions. Went on Dayton's site and downloaded the calibration file based on the serial number. Using mic with audio tools for car audio RTA. Working good.

I've used Shure E2C's for about 5 years (2 or 3 pairs). My most recent pair finally started wearing through the wire coating, and I have too much pride to just electrical tape them (not to mention there are dozens of holes in the insulation). I should note that purchased the clear version of these earphones, but am posting where most of the reviews have already been made.

So I decided it was time to replace the E2C's and wanted to see what my options were. I looked at the Shure SE110's and SE210's, but didn't find many favorable reviews (especially when juxtaposed with the E2C's). I peaked around at other brands but decided I've been too happy with Shure to risk it.

I settled on the SCL2's, assuming they were somehow better than the E2C's, given they are the "Pro" version of the same phones.

My initial reaction is that the sound is more homogenized than the E2C's. I don't feel like I'm listening to the band play live, I feel like I'm listening to them in The Matrix. The sounds feels more synthetic and less real. Given that I've used the E2C's for years, I confident the fit is not the issue; my ears know where they are supposed to fit.

I have read that there is a break-in period for these earphones; I tend to believe that as I've seen break-in periods on all types of speakers (car, home, computer, etc.) I'm 3 weeks in today, and I just hope this break-in doesn't take much longer.

All in all, the phones are very good. After listening for about 30 minutes, I don't really notice the sound being odd. If there is a lack of anything, I would say its treble, as I've had to play with the EQ a bit to get the highs where they should be.

If I had the choice, I'd probably move back to the E2C's. I'm still confident though that these SCL2's will break in.

That's my review for now. I'll do my best to come back and update this in a couple months, hopefully after the break-in.

>>>> UPDATE (6/4/08): Sure enough, the break-in did wonders for the sound quality of these headphones. I would now say these are at least as good as the E2C's, and I would buy these again without hesitation.

Another note is that the cord on these phones seems much more durable and flexible than the E2C's.

>>>> UPDATE (10/26/08): They finally cracked like all of my E2C's have done. Given these headphones are used every day of the week for nearly 12 hours each day (no joke), they were bound to let go sooner or later. The crack showed up an inch from the left earphone, and over a week's time, it split open and exposed wires. As I write this, the earphones are in route to Shure's Service Dept. to be replaced (in all likelihood).

I'm not looking forward to another month-long break-in period, but I am looking forward to getting another new set of these phones. Despite the recurring theme of Shure's products (cracks in the rubber), I will continue to buy and *LOVE* their products for the sound quality. I would rate this item FIVE STARS after 7 months of use.

>>>> UPDATE (11/1/08): Shure replaced the cracked earphones at no charge. Being impatient as I am, the wait seemed like ages (in reality, it took about 14 days from the day I shipped the old earphones to the day I received the new ones).

I *think* the cord on the new earphones is just a bit shorter, or my old cord had stretched out a bit. Also, the break-in period didn't take nearly as long as the first time. After about a week with these new earphones, I would venture to say they are about as broken-in as my previous pair were in 3 months. Sweet!

>>>> UPDATE (2/18/09): The cord near the ears is definitely starting to get brittle, and I suspect that within a couple months there will be cracks. I really thought this pair would avoid this common problem with Shure earphones!

>>>> UPDATE (6/17/09): Amazingly, still going strong with these earphones. The cord near the ears is definitely stiff and I would hate to try bending it, but luckily its formed in the shape I need. See the comments on my review for a great suggestion on repairing the cord if it cracks.

>>>> UPDATE (10/13/09): Was forced to send in these earphones for service. The left earphone was playing at about 70% of its normal volume (and subsequently giving me weird vertigo). Shure took about 2 weeks to send a brand new pair. The new pair broke in as expected and I'm enjoying having a new set!

All in all, I'd say these are probably the best Shure earphones I've owned and I'm very pleased with the sound quality these days (audiophiles rejoice!)

In response to the reviewers who complain about lack of bass and low sound quality you haven't put them in your ears correctly. This type of earphone demands a good fit. That is, they must be lodged in your ear canal, making a seal. This takes some practice and trying out the various sizes and types of included tips, but the results are worth it. The sound quality is excellent and external ambient noise is strongly attenuated.

The Shure SCL2 is the next incarnation of the E2/E2c. The only difference I notice is that the wires are softer and more flexible, which helps keep the drivers in your ears the rigid wires of the E2/E2c had a tendency to pull them out. The reviews on Amazon for the E2 and E2c (which, by the way, are the same product) generally apply to the SCL2 as well.

These are great. When I got my first MP3 I did a lot of research. Bottom line, no matter what player you get, throw away the earphones and get quality. Shure was the one most recommended by those in the know. You must get a seal in your ear to get "bass" and when you do... you do get bass. The sound is amazing, super, clear, full bass. You need to play with the various ear peices. A lot of people like the foam, I prefer the black rubber pieces. Here is the best part. They are guaranteed for two years. Not figuring mine would ever go bad I did not save the sales receipt. One day 2 1/2 years later I got one ear-phone wet, so it quit. I put the earphones in an envelope, wrote that I had been a user of Shure since my hippy days, and that I did not bother to save the receipt. I wrote that if they could help me great, if not, throw them away. Two weeks later, without a question, they sent me a new set of earphones free. Now that is a great company. One more thing. If you use the foam, wet them a little first. One day on the treadmill at the gym I got an insight...wet them with a little syliva first. Wow!!!! perfect, perfect fit. What a difference.

This is one company that got the product and the follow-up support right.

I had a pair of E2C's that sounded great for under $100 earphones. I used them so much that the wire began to fray after about a year (even with the thick wire covering). While I had them for a year (standard electronics product warranty duration) I sent them back to Shure along with a photocopy of my original receipt and they simply sent me a new pair of SCL2's, no questions asked. The SCL2 is the new version of the E2C's. There is an automatic 2 year warranty on all Shure products. You don't have to register, purchase a warranty extension; you just get it for buying their product. Nice.

When I first tried out these earphones, there was no low end at all...they sounded worse than the stock iPod ear buds. Then I switched from the clear PVC sleeves to the soft black rubber. What a difference. The sound had a nice full range and is very warm. The rubber sleeves fit so well that when removing them I had to break the air tight seal first (be careful of that pull them out nice and easy). Once sealed in your ears, these earphones block out most ambient noise, which allows you to listen to music at a much lower volume.

These are definitely the best earphones I have used. The big over the ear headphones can sound better, but if you want an small earphone, these sound pretty good.

I did a lot of research on amazon looking for a shielded cable like this one that wasn't as expensive as monster cables, but was actually shielded-this one suited my needs perfectly. You can find similar length cables at half the price, but they don't look like they're really shielded-no more so than any wired cable, like a phone cord, cheap extension cord, etc. And of course you can find top-end stuff from monster, etc for 3x the price.

I already had a 15 ft, unshielded 3.5mm to RCA cable that I've been using to connect my MP3 player and my laptop to my stereo's aux input, but unless I had everything just right, I was liable to experience a hum-feedback interference. In addition, the old cable would occasionally cause my MP3 player to freeze up, which never happens when I'm using headphones.

I've had this cable for a few weeks now, and with daily use, on both the laptop and the MP3 player, I haven't had any issues at all, so I'm pleased. It seems to be heavy duty cable, well made, and durable. It's very flexible for it's thickness though, so I think anyone needing to route the cable around corners, etc will have no problem at all.

4 stars instead of 5 just because the 3.5 plug housing is rather long and heavy, (which makes it pretty durable-I doubt I'll be suffering from a bad joint connection, but--) I sense that it's going to cause some problems with my laptop jack eventually, because it weighs so much I can see how the jack will get loose over time, especially with daily use. It would have been better designed with an elbow plug, if possible.

Otherwise, I think it's great. Great deal for the money.

update 1-5-13: happy to report my cable still works great; everything is the same. Just want to clarify that I bought mine from cablemart for approx $10 + $5 shipping. Glancing at a few more recent reviews, I can't guarantee that the cable advertised is the same one I bought. I don't think the picture is the same either. the one I bought looks like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Quality-Shielded-Connecting-Receivers-Accepting/dp/B002XWRVIC/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1357381992&sr=1-6

I know, it's a cheap-o cable you say. But I've become somewhat of a student of audio lately and I can now honestly say that buying big expensive cables is absolutely unnecessary unless going very long distances. I've had the $100 cables and the $4 cables and I absolutely cannot tell the difference. I am using this to connect my HDTV to my Sennheiser RS180 headphones (which are STELLAR by the way) and even though it's going 25 feet, the sound is crystal clear. There's no interference, there's no hum, there's no weak signal...there's just crystal clear audio. If you need to connect your TV, DAC or any other RCA source to a 3.5MM input (as in the case of my HDTV to RS180's or to the computer) then this is the cable for you.

I've read reviews that imply that over time that silver, aluminum, copper, etc. all corrode, which is true but it takes years to affect the audio signal. This will give you years of excellent signal to your most demanding equipment and if corrosion ever becomes a problem, buy another $4 cable and you're still $92 ahead of the $100 cables.

Since others have praised this cable's durability, I will restrict myself to commenting on it's sound: wonderful! I have recently been upgrading all my cables in the various a/v and vintage systems I own but I have refrained from the overpriced ones, which to my ears sound no better than cables in the $10-30 range. I run this cable from a iMac to a vintage Sansui receiver, which is on the other side of the room. It's length therefore is a real plus. I was a little wary at first but not only did it outperform my older cables but it sounds better than all the other ipod dock cables that I own, which are twice the price. The thick size and the gold-plated jacks really do make a difference. The RCA jacks in fact fit on snugger than most. For the price this cable is a no brainer.
