Our goal was to find the best USB mic that we could travel with for professional voice-over work (mostly male voice) so we could migrate away from Protools/mbox to Final Cut Studio SoundtrackPro/usb.We first bought the Rhode Podcaster. It is very well built (10 year guarantee!) and very quiet. However, it did not meet our needs because it has a slight 'tinny' sound and not enough gain (even though we speak right on top of the mic; we like to speak in hushed tones).
We then tried the SE USB1000. By comparison to the Rhode (same price point) it was worthless. Poorly built and way too much background noise. For the price the Rhode is much better.
We really wanted the USB concept to work so we tried the SE USB 2200A and find it perfect for all our needs (male voice over mic with enough gain; quiet mic).
We think this would be the perfect USB mic if they took the XLR option out, extended the warranty to 3 years to compete with Rhode, and bring the price down to $200 to compete with Rhode. Until that happens, this is the only professional usb mic worth considering (in my humble opinion). We tried a few lower priced 'well reviewed' usb mics that are not even worth mentioning. They are toys meant for podcasts, not professional voice over.
By the way, we called the SE website tech support a few times and found whoever to pick up the phone to be knowledgeable, honest, and helpful.
